Effect of Seedling Storage in Mud for Double Transplanting on Seedling Quality and Yield of Transplant Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiments were conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute farm during T. Aman (June to December) season in the two consecutive years of 2003 and 2004. In 2003, 30, 50 and 70 days old seedlings of BR22 and BRRI dhan32 were stored in mud and then retransplanted in the main field at 7, 14 and 21 days after storage to find out suitable seedling age and storing time for double transplanting. In 2004, 30- day-old seedlings of five varieties were stored and retransplanted as per 2003 to find out the suitable variety for double transplanting. Result revealed that, seedling height and dry matter content of the seedlings increased with increasing storing time for both the year. Seedling survival after transplanting was 85-90% irrespective of the age and varieties for both the year. Growth duration increased by 10-18 days due to increasing storing time for photoperiod insensitive variety but it was more or less similar for photoperiod sensitive variety. Varietal performance influenced significantly by double transplanting. Photoperiod sensitive variety performed better than photoperiod insensitive variety and, among the photoperiod insensitive variety, short duration variety performed better in double transplanting system. The performance also influenced by seedling age and storing time. The performance of photoperiod sensitive variety was in satisfactory level when 30-50 days old seedling was stored upto 21 days. Contrary, the suitable seedling age and storage duration were 30-50 days and 14 days, respectively for photoperiod insensitive variety.

Objectives:

i} To find out suitable seedling age and storage duration for double transplanting

ii} To find out suitable variety for seedling storage.

Methodology:

In 2003, an experiment was conducted at BRRI farm during the TAman season (June - December) to find out the proper seedling age and storage duration using 30, 50 and 70 days old seedlings. BR22 and BRRI dhan32 used as a variety of photo-sensitive and photo- insensitive variety, respectively. In 2004, another experiment was conducted at BRRI farm using nine varieties for double transplanting. Among the varieties, three were photo- sensitive (BR5, BR22 and BR23), three short duration photo-insensitive varieties (BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan33) and three long duration photo-insensitive varieties (BR3, BR14 and BRRI dhan29). Sprouted seeds of studied varieties were sown in a 10m x 1m seedbed and fertilized 20-9- 16 kg/ha of N-P-K. The seedlings were grown for 30, 50 and 70 days for 2003 and 30 days for 2004 in the seedbed and then uprooted. After uprooting, the seedlings were tied into bundles and stored upright in mud. A film of standing water was maintained and thus the place was kept muddy. Seedlings were thus stored 1 to 3 weeks in the mud. Two-three seedlings were transplanted in the field at a spacing of 20 cm x 20 cm. The soil was fertilized with 60-26-33-20 kg/ha of N-P-K-S, respectively. All P, K and S were applied at the final land preparation and N was top dressed in three equal splits at 15, 30 and Panicle initiation stage. The experimental plots was laid out in a split-split plot design where variety, seedling age and transplanting time was placed in main plot, sub plot and sub-sub plot, respectively in 2003 and laid out in a factorial RCB design in 2004. The crop was protected from weeds and insect pests. Data on seedling quality, seedling survival (%),flowering date, yield and yield components were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Photo-sensitive variety is more suitable for seedling storage than photo-insensitive one. Among the photosensitive varieties, BR22 is the best performer in seedling storage. Among the photo-insensitive varieties, it is better to choose a short duration variety than the long one . In case of photo insensitive variety, the suitable seedling age and storage duration are 30-50 days and 14 days, respectively while 21 days for 30-50 days old seedling and 7 days for 70 days old seedling in case of photosensitive variety.
