Evaluation of Off- Season Jackfruit Germplasm at BARI, Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eight off-season jackfruit germplasm were evaluated at HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2012-13. None of the germplasm produced fruit during off season but five of them produced fruit in the normal fruiting season. A wide variation was observed in growth parameters. The tallest plant (5.50 m) was found in AH Joy-130 and the shortest (1.99 m) in AH Joy-113. Base girth varied from 24.08 cm (AH Joy-113) to 84.0 cm (AH Joy-130). Maximum fruit/plant (6.0) was collected in AH Joy-130 and minimum (2.0) in AH Joy-111. The germplasm showed dark brown to brown skin colour, clavet shaped fruit having yellow pulp. Fruit surface were smooth to spiny. The largest fruit (9.0 kg) was harvested in from AH Joy-121 followed by AH Joy-001 (7.93 kg) and the smallest fruit in AH Joy-002 (3.36 kg). Maximum number of bulb counted in AH Joy-130 (119.33) and minimum (54.0) in AH Joy-002. The heaviest bulb having largest length and diameter (61 g, 7.90 cm and 5.23 cm) was observed in AH Joy-001. The maximum edible portion (43%) recorded in AH Joy-121 and minimum (29%) in AH Joy-002. The highest TSS (18%) was in AH Joy-002 and lowest (15%) in AH Joy-130 and AH Joy-001.

Objectives:

To study the off season performance of collected jackfruit germplasm at HRC, Gazipur

Evaluate, characterized and documented the collected off season jackfruit germplasm

To developed more off season jackfruit variety having higher yield and good quality

Methodology:

The experiment was initiated in 1999. Scions were collected from the selected jackfruit trees having off season bearing potentiality and were grafted and planted in the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, Gazipur. Eight off season jackfruit germplasm namely AH Joy-121, AH Joy-124, AH Joy-001, AH Joy-002, AH Joy-111, AH Joy-112, AH Joy-113, and AH Joy-130. Out of eight germplasm, two were planted in October 1999, two in October, 2002, one in September 2003 and other three germplasm in September 2004. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Planting distance was 6.5 m x 5 m. Fertilizers viz. 250 g TSP, 250 g MP and 20 kg Cowdung per plant applied and subsequent irrigation were applied twice in a year. One on late February, and another on mid August after fruit harvest. The experimental plot was ploughed with power tiller just before applying fertilizer. Twice weeding was performed in the month of March and April, respectively. Irrigation following ring method was given on mid November to March in an interval of 15 days. Data on plant height (m), base girth (cm), canopy spreading, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), rind wt (g), rind thickness (cm), rachis wt (g), rachis length (cm), rachis breadth (cm), number of bulb per fruit, single bulb wt. (g), bulb length (cm), bulb breadth (cm), number of seed per fruit, single seed wt. (g), seed length (cm), seed breadth (cm), yield per plant, TSS (%), edible portion, and some quantitative characteristics were recorded according to the IPBGR descriptors and the mean value were analyzed. The ANOVA were done and mean separation as per DMRT was computed for by using MSTAT-C program.

Achievement/Findings:

None of the germplasm produced fruit during off season but five of them produced fruit in the normal fruiting season. A wide variation was observed in growth parameters. Generally, they show off season behaviour after certain age (10-12 yrs). Hence, this study will be continued.
