Stability Analysis for Yield and Yield Contributing Characters in Spring Wheat (triticum Aestivum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of yield and yield contributing traits of seven varieties of wheat were evaluated at three different sowing dates. Both significant linear and nonlinear (Pooled deviation) components of G X E interaction of yield traits suggested that the genotypes differed significantly with respect to their response (bi), phenotypic index(Pi) and stability S²di. Eberhart and Russell's model suggested that the varieties used in this study were all responsive to the change in cultural environments and performance of these varieties in different environments could hardly be predicted. Most of the varieties performed better under favorable environment (Env.2). The stability parameters indicated that the variety pavon for spike/plant; sonora and pavon for spikelets/spike; gaurab, protiva and anza for 100-grain weight and protiva for yield/plant were found to be most stable and suitable with the change of environments.

Objectives:

This investigation was therefore undertaken to study G X E interaction and to identify both high yielding and stable genotypes over environmental changes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Genetics and Plant Breeding field laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 2004 to April 2005. Seven wheat varieties namely gourab, kanchan, sonora, protiva, balaka, pavon and Anza were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications under three different sowing dates. The plot size was 3x2 m. Seeds were sown at 20x5 crn, respectively. Normal intercultural operations were followed as and when necessary. Data on different traits were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants of each variety from each replication. The character studied were plant height, spikes per plant, spike length, spikelets per spike, florets per spike, grains per spike, grain yield per spike, 100 grain weight, yield per plant and yield per plot. Combined analysis of variance and stability parameter i.e. the regression co-efficient (bi) and deviation from regression (S²di) were calculated. The ANOVA showed highly significant (P<0.01) variation among the genotypes for the characters under study. The environmental effect was significant at 1 % level for all expect 100 grain weight. The individual environmental effects for 100 grain weight appeared non significant. The genotype-environment interaction for all the characters was significant at 1 % level of probability. It was observed that the mean squares for the genotypes (G) and the environments(E) were highly significant which suggested that there real differences existed between the genotypes and between the effects of different environments on the genotypes. The highly significant GXE interaction indicated for estimating the stability parameters. The E+(G X E) component indicated the reaction of the genotypes differentially upon the environments. Both significant linear and non- linear (pooled deviation) components of G X E interaction for yield traits suggested that the genotypes differed significantly with respect to their response (bi) and the stability (S²_di).

Achievement/Findings:

Genotypic mean varied from 13.9g to 18.0g per plant . Varieties gaurab and pavon showed positive phenotypic indices. Adjudging three parameters (Pi, bi and S²di) protiva could be considered, stable but suitable only poor environments. The variety protiva had bi values significantly different from the unity with non-significant S²di which indicated high responsiveness of the genotypes but suitable for favorable environments. The rest six varieties had significant S ²di values suggesting their instability over environment.
