Dry Matter Accumulation and Its Partitioning in Different Plant Parts of Mungbean as Influenced by Sowing Depth and Seed Size

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) farm, Dhaka, during March to June 2007 to investigate the influence of varying seed size and depth of sowing on dry matter accumulation and its partitioning in different plant parts of mungbean. The treatment comprised three sowing depths viz., 2, 4 and 6 cm and three seed sizes viz. < 3.2 mm, 3.2 to 4 mm and> 4 mm in diameter. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications having sowing depth in main plots and seed size in sub-plots. Results showed that 4 cm depth, Seed size of > 4 mm and their interaction had significant influence on most of the plant parts. Sowing depth 4 cm with> 4 mm seed size showed the highest dry weight of leaf (5.585 g/plant), stem (4.9 g/plant), inflorescence (12.84 g/plant) and total dry weight (25.69 g/plant) at harvest. But, 2 cm depth with seed size of > 4 mm diameter showed the highest dry weight of root (2.54 g/plant). Positive correlations were observed in dry matter accumulation among the plant parts. The correlation between dry matter accumulation in leaf and stem were found to be significant. The relationship between inflorescence and the total dry matter was highly significant at the harvest. The interaction between sowing depth (4 cm) with seed size below 3.2 mm showed the greater efficiency in dry matter production at the maturity.

Objectives:

To investigate the influence of varying seed size and depth of sowing on dry matter accumulation and its partitioning in different plant parts of mungbean.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at the Agronomy field laboratory of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during March to June 2007 to find out the influence of varying seed size and sowing depth on dry matter accumulation and its partitioning in different parts of mungbean. The seeds of mungbean variety BARI Mung 5 (collected from Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur) were sown on 15 March 2007. The soil was clay loam having pH 7.1, organic matter 1.08%, total N 0.054%, potassium 0.27 meq/l00 g soil, calcium 3.5 meq/l00 g soil, magnesium 0.46 meq/l00 g soil, phosphorus 10.46 ppm, sulphur 18 ppm, boron 0.4 ppm, copper 1.6 ppm, iron 14 ppm, manganese 36.8 ppm and zinc 1.84 pmm. The treatments comprised three sowing depths (2 cm=D₁ , 4 cm=D₂ and 6 cm=D₃) and three seed sizes; {small <3.2 mm=S₁), medium (3.2 mm to 4 mm=S₂) and large (> 4 mm=S₃)}. The seeds were passed through different sized meshes and the expected sized seeds were selected as per treatments. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design placing sowing depth treatments in the main plot and the seed size in the sub-plot. Data on dry matter accumulation in the individual plant parts viz. leaf, stem, root and inflorescence peduncles, pods and flowers were collected. For dry matter calculation the sampled plants were oven dried at 70⁰C until the constant weight was attained. The dry weight of each plant parts was measured individually. The total weight was calculated by summing up the weight of all the plant part at different growth stages of plants. The data were statistically analyzed using the IRRISTAT computer package programme. Least Significant Difference (LSD) at 5% level of significance was used to compare the mean differences among the treatments.

Four cm depth, Seed size of > 4 mm and their interaction had significant influence on most of the plant parts. The results imply that medium depth of sowing (4 cm) with seed size below 3.2 mm could be best efficient in dry matter production at maturity.
