In-situ Evaluation of Off-season Jackfruit Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

One out standing off-season jackfruit germplasm AH (Off) Bur-001 was evaluated at ARS, Rangpur during 2011-13. The plant height base girth and canopy spread of N-S, and E-W direction were 12.50 m, 1.75 m and 11.50, and 10.00 m, respectively. The germplasm flowered twice in a year which were 4^th week of July and 3^rd week of February, respectively. Harvest was also done in two times a year that were 3^rd week of December to 1^st week of March considered off season bearing and another in 2^nd week of June to 4^th week of July considered on season bearing. Single fruit weight was found higher (9.00 kg) in the on-season as compared to that of off-season (4.07 kg). Number of bulbs/fruit and edible portion (459.50 and 60.22%) were recorded higher in the on-season fruit. The TSS content of fruits was noted same (24.50%) in both seasons. Single bulb weight (21.90 g), bulb size (5.64 x 3.40 cm) and single seed weight (4.86 g) were found maximum in the off-season. The highest number of fruits and yield per plant (40 and 360.00 kg, respectively) were recorded in the on-season and that were the lowest (17 and 69.19 kg, respectively) in off season.

Objectives:

To study the off season performance of selected jackfruit germplasm at Rangpur

Evaluate, characterized and documented the selected off season jackfruit germplasm

To developed more off season jackfruit variety having higher yield and good quality for Rangpur region

Methodology:

One jackfruit plant of about 45 years old has been found bearing fruits during off-season. The outstanding off season jackfruit germplasm was identified at C.O. Bazar under Sadar upazila of Rangpur district and evaluated at Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur during 2011-13. Fertilizers viz. 250 g TSP, 250 g MP and 20 kg Cowdung per plant applied and subsequent irrigation were applied twice in a year. One on late February, and another on mid August after fruit harvest. The experimental plot was ploughed with power tiller just before applying fertilizer. Twice weeding was performed in the month of March and April, respectively. Irrigation following ring method was given on mid November to March in an interval of 15 days. Unwanted branches were pruned off in September 2012. Fruit harvesting was started from December and continued up to July. Data on plant height (m), base girth (cm), canopy spreading, time of flowering, time of harvesting, harvest duration, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), rind wt (g), rind thickness (cm), rachis wt (g), rachis length (cm), rachis breadth (cm), number of bulb per fruit, single bulb wt. (g), bulb length (cm), bulb breadth (cm), number of seed per fruit, single seed wt. (g), seed length (cm), seed breadth (cm), yield per plant, TSS (%) and edible portion were recorded. For statistically analysis range, mean, Sd and CV (%) were computed by using MS Excel program.

Achievement/Findings:

The off-season jackfruit germplasm AH Bur-001 produced flower twice in a year and fruits were also harvested in on and off seasons in a year. The plant gave higher yield in the on-season compared to off-season. But the fruits of off season bearing were good in test with considerable fruit weight, number of fruits and yield and considered as a outstanding off season jackfruit germplasm.
