Evaluation of Off Season Jackfruit Germplasm at Akbarpur, Moulvibazar

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The selected off-season jackfruit germplasm were evaluated at the RARS, Akbarpur, Moulvibazar during the year 2011-13. Data on phenology, yield and fruit characters of off-season jackfruit germplasm exhibited a wide diversity. During 2012 earliest 1^st harvest was done on in AH Akb-003 (24 January), followed by AH Akb-014 (10 February) and that of latest in AH Akb-016 (24 March). The highest number of fruits/plant was harvested from AH Akb-014 (67) followed by AH Akb-003 (60) and AH Akb-015(42). The lowest number of fruits was obtained from AH Akb-008 (22). Single fruit weight ranged from 2.7 kg (AH Akb-013) to 5.7 kg (AH Akb-015). The highest fruit length was observed in AH Akb-014 (28.55 cm) and the lowest fruit length in AH Akb-013 (18.33 cm). Fruit breadth ranged from 17.0 cm (AH Akb-013) to 21.0 cm (AH Akb-008). Number of bulb per fruit was 86.0 (AH Akb-003) to 24.0 (AH Akb-013). Maximum percent of edible portion was observed in AH Akb-008 (33.33%) followed by AH Akb-003 (32.43%). The highest TSS was noted in AH Akb-008 (31.0%) which was followed by the germplasm AH Akb-016 (28.0%).

Objectives:

To study the off season performance of selected jackfruit germplasm at Moulvibazar.

Evaluate, characterized and documented the selected off season jackfruit germplasm.

To developed more off season jackfruit variety having higher yield and good quality.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Akbarpur, Moulvibazar during 2011-13. Some outstanding off season jackfruit germplasm were collected and evaluated from Mohazerabad under Sreemangal Upazilla of Moulvibazar district. Seedlings were raised in the nursery and planted in the RARS, Akbarpur in 2004. A single plant has been considered as a unit treatment. The treatments were AH Akb-003, AH Akb-008, AH Akb-013, AH Akb-014, AH Akb-015 and AH Akb-016. Individual plant was fertilized with cowdung (20 kg), urea (500 g), TSP (500 g), MP (500 g) and gypsum (250g) in two equal installments, one at the onset and other at the end of rainy season. Weeding, irrigation and other management practices were done as and when necessary. Unwanted branches were pruned off just after harvesting. Fruit harvesting was started from December and continued up to July. Fully mature fruits were harvested from the plant. Five fruit from each plant were randomly selected for evaluation. Data on plant height (m), base girth (cm), canopy spreading, time of flowering, time of harvesting, harvest duration, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), rind wt (g), rind thickness (cm), rachis wt (g), number of bulb per fruit, single bulb wt. (g), number of seed per fruit, single seed wt. (g), yield per plant, TSS (%), edible portion, fruit shape, fruit color, bulb color, bulb taste, juiciness, fibrousness, and bulb texture were recorded. For statistically analysis range, mean, Sd and CV (%) were computed by using MS Excel program.

Achievement/Findings:

Most of the germplasm produced fruits during off season, among them AH Akb-014 and AH Akb-003 were found superior in respect of number of fruits per plant, the germplasm AH Akb-015 and AH Akb-014 were single fruit weight, germplasm AH Akb-003 produced maximum bulbs, but the germplasm AH Akb-008 was out standing in respect of percent edible portion and TSS content of fruits. Thus it was concluded that none of the germplasm was found superior for most of the characters.
