Study the Performance of Jackfruit Germplasm in the Hilly Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the HTARS, Ramgarh, Khagrachari during 2012-2013. The maximum number of fruit/plant was obtained from AH Ram-002 (92) followed by AH Ram-006 (78) and the minimum from AH Ram-044 (46). Individual fruit weight was maximum in AH Ram-041 (9.94 kg) followed by AH Ram-044 (9.77 kg) and minimum in AH Ram-006 (6.85 kg). The highest yield/plant (623.76 kg) was observed in AH Ram-002 followed by AH Ram-006 (534.30 kg) and the lowest from AH Ram-044 (449.42 kg). Number of bulbs/fruit was noted the highest in AH Ram-041 (205. 78) followed by AH Ram-002 (178.33), while the lowest in AH Ram-044 (105.36). The weight of non edible portions/fruit was found maximum in AH Ram-041 (5.06 kg) and minimum in AH Ram-002 (3.23 kg). Maximum TSS was obtained from AH Ram-002 (23.08%) followed by AH Ram-041 (20.78%) and AH Ram-006 (19.92%). Edible portion was the highest in AH Ram-002 (52.36%) and the lowest from AH Ram-041 (49.09%). Single bulb weight was found the highest in AH Ram-002 (36.33 g), while the lowest in AH Ram-041 (29.48 g). Fruits of AH Ram-002 and AH Ram-041 having excellent taste with very sweet, less fiber and yellow coloured pulp.

Objectives:

To study the performance of selected jackfruit germplasm at Ramgarh, Khagrachari.

Evaluate, characterized and documented the selected jackfruit germplasm.

To developed more jackfruit variety having higher yield and good quality.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Hill Tracts Agricultural Research station, Ramgarh, Khagrachari during 2012-2013. Among primarily selected 100 germplasm, 4 lines viz. AH Ram-002, AH Ram-006, AH Ram-041, AH Ram-044 to were selected earlier and included in this study to evaluate the superior jackfruit lines. Each of the plants was fertilized with cowdung 10 kg, Urea 1000g, TSP 900g and MP 500g in two installments at the beginning and the end of the rainy season. No plant protection measure was taken as there was no insect pest visible during the study period. Unwanted branches were pruned off just after harvesting. Five fruits from each plant were randomly selected for evaluation. Fully mature fruit were harvested from the plants and data on different parameters viz. plant height (m), base girth (cm), canopy spreading, time of flowering, time of harvesting, harvest duration, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), rind wt (g), rind thickness (cm), rachis wt (g), number of bulb per fruit, single bulb wt. (g), number of seed per fruit, single seed wt. (g), yield per plant, TSS (%), edible portion, fruit shape, fruit color, bulb color, bulb taste, juiciness, fibrousness, and bulb texture were recorded. For statistically analysis range, mean, Sd and CV (%) were computed by using MS Excel program.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on yield, colour, size and organoleptic test it might be concluded that the jackfruit line AH Ram 002 may be released as a variety.
