Production Petential of Goats and Nutritive Value of the Feedstuffs Fed to Goats

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey on the performance of goats at the village condition and nutritive value of feed stuffs were conducted. The growth ( 25g/d) and lactational performances of goats are low (0.2 l/d) compared to reproductive rate ( 2 kinds/parturation). Goats, were fed on 19 varieties of forages and crop by-products. Rumen degradability were determined on all the feed stuffs. Higher readily soluble materials content (> 10%), potential degradability (> 40%) and degradation rate (> 2%) were found in Jackfruit, Morunga, Shewra, Banyan, koral leaves and in all the brans

Objectives:

To investigate productivity of goats under the existing farming system and nutritive value of the feed stuffs offered to goats

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with the survey of the farm households and determination of nutritive values of feed stuffs for goats.

Experiment 1. Farm household survey A total of 200 households in the northern and southern part of Bangladesh were surveyed. The data collection were carried out with the questionaire on the system of goat farming, their productivity, methods of feeding and constraints for rearing goats.

Experiment 2.Nutritive value of the feed stuffs The most common storage and crop by products used for feeding goats were selected for determination of their nutritive value. They were evaluated through rumen degradation study. Rumen degradability studies of the different types of sun-dried grasses, tree leaves and crop by-products were conducted. Sample of 4g were placed in dacron bag and suspended in the rumen of two fistulated cows. The cows were offered rice straw ad libitum and 2 kg of wheat bran per day. The samples were removed at, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48 and 72h. They were then washed under running tap water for 5 min and dried at 60°c until cons tent weight was attained. Degradability of the feed samples was determined as described by Bhargava and Orskov (1987). All feed and rumen degraded samples were dried at 70°c, feed samples were ground through 1 mm sieve and analyzed following the method of Faichney and white (1983).
