Evaluation of Exotic Mango Germplasm at BARI, Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five exotic mango germplasm were evaluated at HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2011-12. The full blooming period varied from early February to early March’12. Inflorescence length ranging from 14.03 cm in MI Ex-004 to 29.82 cm in MI Ex-002. Harvesting period ranged from 1^st week of June’12 in MI Ex-005 to 3^rd week of July’12 in MI Ex-002 and MI Ex-004. Fruits/plant was the highest in MI Ex-005 (126) and the lowest in MI Ex-002 (50). Maximum fruit weight was recorded from MI Ex-003 (356 g) and minimum from MI Ex 005 (121 g). TSS was noted the highest in MI Ex-004 (23.67%) and the lowest in MI Ex 005 (17.00%). Edible portion varied from 58.33% (MI Ex-005) to 72.67% (MI Ex-004). Shelf life varied from 5.00 (MI Ex-005) to 7.67 days (MI Ex-004). The infestation of leaf cutting weevil ranged from 2.33% (MI Ex-003) to 6.33% (MI EX-005) and fruit fly infestation from 1.33% (MI Ex-003) to 10.66% (MI Ex-002). MI Ex 002 showing 4.66% and 11.66% vegetative and floral malformation, respectively. Most of the germplasm free from anthracnose except MI Ex-002 and MI Ex-004. Fruit cracking was observed in MI Ex 004 (42.66%) and MI Ex- 002 (11.33%).

Objectives:

The varieties cultivated in our country are irregular or biennial in bearing habit, a problem of great economic importance. As the population of Bangladesh is increasing rapidly the nutritional as well as economic problem is also getting worsening. To overcome these problems, varietal improvement by objective and selection of exotic germplasm is of great importance. With this aim in view, the study was undertaken with five exotic mango germplasm at HRC, Joydebpur, Gazipur.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2011-12. Five exotic germplasm of mango were included in this study. These were MI EX-001, MI EX-002, MI EX-003, MI EX-004 and MI EX-005. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. One year old vineer grafts were planted on July 2006 at a spacing of 8 × 8 m. The trees were fertilized with recommended doses of manure and fertilizers at the end of April and September. In addition each plant was fertilized by 100 g urea, 100 g TSP, 100 g MOP, 50 g zinc sulphate and 50 g boron with irrigation at the reproductive stage of the plant. Intercultural operations such as weeding and ploughing were done in the month of September, December, March, May and July. Regular irrigations at 15 days and 30 days interval were applied at blooming stage and fruiting stage, respectively. Agromethrin 10 EC @ 1 ml and Tilt 250 EC@ 0.5 ml per litre of water was applied twice to control mango hopper and anthracnose. Necessary actions were taken against other pests and diseases as and when needed. Data on tree growth as well as quantitative and qualitative characteristics of fruit was recorded as per ‘Descriptors for Mango’.

Achievement/Findings:

The overall growth condition of all the germplasm was found satisfactory. Considering yield and quality MI Ex-001, MI Ex-002 and MI Ex-004 were found promising and might be introduced as varieties in Bangladesh.
