Evaluation of Some Coloured Mango Germplasm at Chapai Nawabganj

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thirty six coloured mango germplasm were evaluated at RHRS, Chapai Nawabganj during 2012-13. The germplasm were collected through mango show 2008. Among the 36 germplasm only 7 produced fruit in 2012-2013. A significant variation was observed among the fruited germplasm regarding fruit characteristics. The heaviest fruits was in MI Cha-034 (355 g) followed by MI Cha-009 (245 g) but the lightest (185 g) in MI Cha-005. The germplasm MI Cha-034 produced the longest (12.8 cm) and thickest fruit (7.5 cm) against the shortest (9.2 cm) by MI Cha-005 and thinnest (5.3 cm) by MI Cha-002. MI Cha-013 recorded the broadest fruit (9.2 cm) against narrowest by MI Cha-005. Germplasm also showed highly significant differences regarding yield both in number and weight of fruit/tree. Significantly higher yield regarding number (45) and weight (11.0 kg) of fruits per tree was found in MI Cha-009. On the other hand the lowest yield both in number and weight (5 and 1.00 kg, respectively) of fruits per tree was noted in MI Cha-002. Variations were also observed regarding qualitative characters of fruits like shape, skin colour at ripen, fruit attractiveness, adherence of skin to pulp, and skin thickness.

Objectives:

A good number of high quality varieties of mango are in cultivation in this country. Most of the commercial varieties are lack of skin colour. So, those varieties cannot attract the buyers especially we are being failed to catch the foreign markets. There is a wide genetic diversity in the local germplasm having a lot of coloured varieties. Therefore, this study was undertaken with a view to identify the mango lines having attractive colour as well as good qualitative characters.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Chapai Nawabganj during 2011-12. The grafts of 36 coloured mango germplasm which were collected through coloured mango show, 2008 were planted in July 2009. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Single tree has been considered as a single replication. Planting distance was maintained at 5 X 5 m in both ways. The trees were fertilized with recommended doses of manure and fertilizers at the end of April and September. In addition each plant was fertilized by 100 g urea, 100 g TSP, 100 g MOP, 50 g zinc sulphate and 50 g boron with irrigation at the reproductive stage of the plant. Intercultural operations such as weeding and ploughing were done in the month of September, December, March, May and July. Regular irrigations at 15 days and 30 days interval were applied at blooming stage and fruiting stage, respectively. Agromethrin 10 EC @ 1 ml and Tilt 250 EC@ 0.5 ml per litre of water was applied twice to control mango hopper and anthracnose. Necessary actions were taken against other pests and diseases as and when needed. The data on different parameters were collected as per mango descriptor followed by IPGR. The data were analyzed by using a computer soft ware programme cropstat7.2.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the 35 only 7 germplasm obtained fruit in this year. So the experiment will be carried out for next four years to draw any conclusion. Among the fruited germplasm MI Cha-009 was promising regarding fruits per plant and yield and MI Cha-034 was found promising considering individual fruit weight and qualitative characters like colour, TSS and fruit attractiveness.
