Collection and Evaluation of Plantain Germplasam at Burirhat, Rangpur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty one plantain germplasm were evaluated at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during 2012-13. The results of the studied characters exhibited a wide variation. The tallest plants (305 cm) were found in MP Bur-006 and the shortest plants (280 cm) in MP Bur-007. Maximum base (60 cm) and top girth (41 cm) were recorded in MP Bur-003 and MP Bur-001, respectively. Days to shooting was manifested maximum in MP Bur-003 (305) and minimum in MP Bur-006 (219). Germplasm MP Bur-006 produced maximum number of hands (7) and fingers per bunch (84). Maximum days (370) to harvest was required in MP Bur-001 and minimum in MP Bur-006 (341). Fruit length (15.40 cm) and diameter (4.01 cm) were also noted minimum in MP Bur-006. Maximum yield per plant (15.12 kg) was recorded in MP Bur-006, whereas minimum weight of single fruit (180g) was recorded in the same germplasm.

Objectives:

To study the adaptability of collected plantain germplasm at Burirhat, Rangpur.

To study the growth, yield and fruit characteristics of collected plantain germplasm at Burirhat, Rangpur.

To evaluate, characterize and document the growth, yield and fruit characteristics of plantain germplasm.

To develop plantain variety having good growth, yield and fruit characteristics.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during 2012-13. Twenty one germplasm were collected and planted in April to May 2012. Among them five germplasm viz. MP Bur-001, MP Bur-003, MP Bur-004, MP Bur-006 and MP Bur-007 were evaluated under this experiment. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD design with three replications. Four sword suckers were accommodated in each plot maintaining 2 x 2 m row to row as well as plant to plant distance. Suckers were planted in the field on January 2012. The land was fertilized with cowdung @ 30t/ha and urea, TSP, MP and gypsum @ 1550, 1250, 1550 and 620 kg per hectare, respectively as per recommendation. Half of the cowdung, TSP and gypsum were applied in the field during final land preparation and the remaining halves were applied in the pit 10 days before planting. Urea and MP were applied as side dressing in five equal installments at one month interval starting from one month after planting. Irrigation, weeding, pest control and other cultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded on growth, yield and fruit characteristics from each unit plot and analyzed statistically following MSTATC programme.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the earliness, finger size, fingers per bunch and yield the germplasm MP Bur-006 was found superior and might be recommended for conservation and use.
