Performance of four plantain lines with a previous released variety BARI Kola-2 as check were studied at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI,  Ishurdi, Pabna. Plant height, Base girth and top girth showed the significant variation among the line and variety. Plant height varied among the lines and variety. MP-024 was found the tallest (3.39 m) and BARI Kola-2 had the shortest (2.72 m) among the studied lines. Early shooting and early harvesting were recorded in MP-006 (334 and 391 days, respectively) while BARI Kola-2 took maximum time for shooting and harvesting (350 and 421 days, respectively).  No significant variations were found in case of number of green and yellow leaves per plant and number of hands per bunch. The number of fingers and bunch weight varied widely. The highest number of finger per bunch (96.0) was noted in MP-006. The bunch weight was also highest in MP-006 (19.82 kg). The least number of finger per bunch and bunch weight were found in MP-024 (59 and 7.46 kg, respectively). The plantain line MP-006 produced the highest yield (49.60 t/ha) followed by BARI Kola-2 (43.09 t/ha) and MP-007 (42.92 t/ha). The lowest yield was obtained from MP-024 (21.20 t/ha)

To study the adaptability of selected plantain germplasm at Ishurdi, Pabna.

To study the growth, yield and fruit characteristics of selected plantain germplasm at Ishurdi, Pabna.

To develop plantain variety having good growth, yield and fruit characteristics.

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI,  Ishurdi, Panba during October to November 2011-2012. Four selected lines of cooking banana viz. MP-006, MP-007, MP-010 and MP-024 along with a control namely BARI Banana-2 were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 3 x 7.2 m. Four sword suckers were accommodated in each plot maintaining 1.8 x 1.8 m row to row as well as plant to plant distance. Suckers were planted in the field on 8 October 2011. The land was fertilized with cowdung @ 30t/ha and urea, TSP, MP and gypsum @ 1550, 1250, 1550 and 620 kg per hectare, respectively as per recommendation. Half of the cowdung, TSP and gypsum were applied in the field during final land preparation and the remaining halves were applied in the pit 10 days before planting. Urea and MP were applied as side dressing in five equal installments at one month interval starting from one month after planting. Irrigation, weeding, pest control and other cultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded on growth, yield and fruit characteristics from each unit plot and analyzed statistically following MSTATC programme.

Considering fruit weight, number of fingers per bunch and yield, the line of MP-006 was found superior compared to BARI Kola -2. These line may be recommended to release as a plantain variety for Rajshahi region.
