Collection and Evaluation of Papaya Genotypes in Chittagong Hill Tracts

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty seven papaya genotypes were evaluated at ARS, Raikhali, Rangamatit during the period of 2011-13 to find out the superior hermaphrodite papaya germplasm in hilly areas. The genotypes CP Rai-004, CP Rai-006, CP Rai-017, CP Rai-019, CP Rai-026, CP Rai-028, CP Rai-029 and CP Rai-038 were hermaphrodite in sex type. Among the hermaphrodite papaya genotypes maximum number of fruit/plant (39) was recorded from CP Rai-017, whereas the minimum (15) in CP Rai-038. The heaviest fruit (3.20 kg) was found in CP Rai-038, but the lightest (1.04 kg) in CP Rai-017. Maximum seeds/fruit (350) was found in CP Rai-004, while minimum (120) in CP Rai-038. The thickest flesh (4.00 cm) was obtained from CP Rai-038 and CP Rai-026, regarding the thinnest (2.72 cm) in CP Rai-017. Higher fruit yield/tree (50 kg) was found in CP Rai-006, while lower (30 kg) in CP Rai-004. The highest TSS (12%) was recorded in CP Rai-026 and CP Rai-038, compared to the lowest (8%) in CP Rai-004 and CP Rai-019. The organoleptic taste was found very good for CP Rai-006, CP Rai-026 and CP Rai-038, good for CP Rai-017 and CP Rai-028. CP Rai-004, CP Rai-019 and CP Rai-029 were poor in taste.

Objectives:

Papaya (Carica papaya) is a polygamous plant with various sex forms. Three sex forms are commonly found in papaya, viz. pistillate, hermaphrodite and staminate. The hermaphrodite flowers can be classified into three gropus viz. intermedia, elongate and pentandria. The elongate flowers are considered to be the normal bisexual flowers where the corolla tube is formed by the fusion of petals to their 2/3^rd length and has ten stamens in two series. It is easy of self pollination. The hermaphrodite plants produced fruit, irrespectively. Hence those were more productive. Therefore this study has been undertaken to find out the superior hermaphrodite elongate type of papaya genotypes.

Methodology:

The experiment with 27 papaya genotypes was conducted at hill valley of Agricultural Research Station of Raikhali in Rangamati Hill District during the period of June 2011 to September 2013 to find out the superior hermaphrodite elongate type of papaya germplasm in hilly areas. The plant spacing was maintained 2 × 2 m. Three seedlings of 45 days old were transplanted in each pit during May. Among them only one plant per pit was allowed to grow after having the desired female or hermaphrodite plant. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ 10 kg cowdung, 450 gm urea, 450 gm TSP, 450 gm MoP, 250 gm zypsum, 20 gm borax and 15 gm zinc sulphate per plant. All the manures and fertilizers except urea and MoP were applied during pit preparation. Each time 50 gm urea and 50 gm MoP were applied at 30 days intervals from transplanting to flowering. It was doubled after flowering. Intercultural operations like weeding, irrigation, stalking etc. were done as per requirement. Data on sex types, yield and yield contributing characters, and fruit qualities were taken duly as per ‘IBPGR Descriptors’. Organoleptic taste was done in presence of 30 officers, staffs and farmers.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering fruit size, flesh thickness, yield and fruit quality the papaya genotypes CP Rai-006, CP Rai-017, CP Rai-026, CP Rai-028 and CP Rai-038 have been selected for future evaluation considering their hermaphrodite nature, better TSS, fruit size and yield.
