Studies on the Variability in Kanchannagar Peara

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Variability in Kanchannagar peyara was studied in the commercial orchards of Patiya and Chandanaish Upazilla of Chittagong district during 2012-13. Wide variability in fruit characters was observed. Fruit length ranged from 3.6 to 8.2 cm with mean 5.71cm and Sd 1.12. Breadth of fruit ranged from 4.2 to 7.9 cm with mean 6.05 and Sd 0.87. Flesh thickness ranged from 0.8 to 1.7 cm with mean 1.23 and Sd 0.26. The germplasm 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 14 and 16 showed flesh thickness higher than the average. Individual fruit weight ranged from 38-214 gm with mean fruit weight 119.82 gm and Sd 47.07. Among the selected germplasm, plant no 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9 produced bigger fruit than those others. The TSS content of fruits ranged from 6.5 to 11.5 with mean 9.32. The TSS percent of the germplasm 1, 2, 5, 9, 15, 16 and 17 was recorded higher than mean. The surface texture of the fruit varied from rough to smooth. The skin color is green at mature stage and greenish yellow to yellow at ripen stage. The flesh color of all the germplasm is white except Plant no 17 which was pink fleshed.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to study the extent of variability in fruit characteristics and also to standardize the variety with good quality and high yield potentiality.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at the commercial plantations/orchards of the village Kharana under Patiya Upazilla and Kanchannagar and Hashimpur under Chandanaish Upazilla during July-August, 2012. A preliminary survey was done in the orchard to determine the variability in fruit characters. During survey, visit and discussion were done with the different stakeholder. Seventeen kinds of Kanchannagar peyara plants were identified depending on the fruit types. The fruit samples were taken from the identified plants for data collection. Data on quantitative and qualitative characteristics of fruits viz. fruit length, fruit breadth, fruit weight, flesh thickness and number of seed loop, TSS percent, surface texture, seediness, skin and flesh colour. The collected data were analyzed for evaluation of fruit characters. Besides, the saplings were collected from the identified samples and planted at the RARS field for evaluation.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering fruit characters, seventeen different plants (germplasm) were identified and the saplings were collected and planted at the RARS. Among the collected germplasm Flesh thickness ranged from 0.8 to 1.7 cm. The germplasm 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 14 and 16 showed flesh thickness higher than the average. Individual fruit weight ranged from 38-214 gm and the germplasm 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9 produced bigger fruit than average. The TSS content of fruits ranged from 6.5 to 11.5.
