Evaluation of Hybrid Guava Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Hybridization was done between BARI Payara-2 (female parent) and collected colour fleshed guava lines (male parent) at HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2001-2002. The heaviest (353g) fruit was obtained from BARI Peyara-2 followed by HG-003(1) (322 g) while the lightest (162 g) from PGC-008. The mesocarp thickness of fruit was maximum (2.14 cm) in BARI Peyara-2 followed by HG-003(1) (1.96 cm). TSS in mesocarp was highest (8.39%) in HG-008 followed by PGC-003(1) (8.13%) and lowest (6.12%) in PGC-002. The number of seeds and weight of seeds per fruit were lower in HG-003(1) (274 and 3.09 g, respectively) and higher in BARI Peyara-2 (441 and 5.85 g, respectively). Among the F₁ lines, the highest fruits/plant (58.09) was recorded in HG-003(3) followed by HG-003(2) (51.36), while the lowest (23.69) was recorded in HG-002. Maximum fruit yield (12.10 kg) was observed in HG-003(1) and minimum (6.10 kg) in HG-002. Among the F₁ hybrids, fruits of HG-003(1) were pink to deep pink in colour, good in taste with attractive appearance. Fruits of HG-003(3) were similar in nature. Fruits of HG-003(2) and HG-008 were slight crispy at early mature stage. Fruits of HG-003(2) and HG-008 were sweet in taste.

Objectives:

Guava (Psidium guajava) is an important fruit of Bangladesh. Considering flesh colour guava are two types viz. coloured flesh and white fleshed. The colour fleshed guava lines available in Bangladesh are generally soft fleshed, smaller in size and more seeded, but due to their flesh colour everybody likes it. BARI has developed three high yielding guava varieties (Kazi Peyara, BARI Peyara-2 and BARI Peyara-3). Fruits of first two varieties are big with crispy white flesh and third one having smaller fruits with soft pink flesh. The present study has been undertaken to transfer the pink flesh colour to BARI Peyara-2 to develop high yielding, good quality, crispy pink flesh coloured guava variety.

Pink flesh guava

Out of nine cross combinations, three fruits were obtained from the cross BARI Peyara-2 x PGC-003 and only one fruit was obtained both from the crosses BARI Peyara-2 x PGC-002 and BARI Peyara-2 x PGC-008. Seeds were extracted from the fruits and seedlings were raised in poly-bags. Five seedlings ware selected randomly from each of the fruit and planted in the field during March 2003 for evaluation. The planted seedlings are found to set fruits from March 2004. Later on, F₁ plants started dieing due to wilt disease. Therefore, a disease free orchard of the hybrid lines along with their parents was established during May 2008. Plants of this orchard started flowering and fruiting from February 2009. To establish and maintain this orchard standard cultural practice as well plant protection measures were followed as and when necessary. Data in respect of number of fruits per plant and quantitative and qualitative characteristics of fruits were recorded during June to August 2012.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering fruit characteristics like flesh colour, taste, number of seeds and yield per plant, HG-003(1) and HG-003(3) were found to be promising. The experiment will be continued for further investigation.
