Evaluatian of Leucaena and Water Hyacinth Leaf Meal as Dietary Protein Sources for the Fry of Indian Major Carp. Labeo Rohita ( Hamilton)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study aimed at evaluating the suitability of lecucaena (Leuceene leucocephele) and water hyacinth ( Eichhornie crassipes ) leaf meal, as partial substitutes for dietary fish meal protein for fry of lndian major carp, labeo rohita ( Hamilton). Six experimental diets were formulated to contain 20% and 40% of total dietary protein as plant protein using soaked and unsoaked leucaena and water hyacinth leaf meal balanced by protein from fish meal. Two control diets, one for diets on containing laucaena and another for water hyacinth leaf meal, were prepared with fish meal as the sole source of protein. All diets were formulated to contain about 40% protein. The 42-day growth trial was conducted under laboratory condition with three replications. Based on criteria such as feed acceptability, growth, food conversion and protein utilization, both the control diets showed the best performance. There was a trend of reduced performance with increased inclusion of plant protein in the diet for all treatments. Soaking of leucaena did not significantly improve the performance of carp fry. However, in terms of cost of feed and economic return, diets containing higher inclusion of soaked leucaena and water hyacinth leaf meal proved to be better than control and other diets.

Objectives:

To evaluate the suitability of leucaena (in both soaked and unsoaked from)and water hyacinth leaf meal, as partial substitutes for dietary fish meal protein for fry of Indian major carp. Lebeo rohita ( Hamilton).

Methodology:

A static indoor rearing system was used to conduct the experiment. Forty Iitre capacity rectangular glass aquaria containing 30 litres of water was used as experimental tanks. A stone aerator connected to a compressed air supply was used to maintain an adequate level of dissolved oxygen in each test tank. Due to the unavailability of sufficient number of fry of uniform size, two separate trials were conducted simultaneously using two different size classes of Labeo rohita fry. These induced bred major carp fry were obtained from Fisheries Research Institute, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Campus, Mymensingh. Prior to the start of experiment, the fry were acclimated to the laboratory condition for 7 days and fed an artificial diet containing fish meal, rice bran, wheat bran and wheat flour (protein content 40%). Seven isonitrogenous diets were formulated to evaluate un soaked and soaked leucaena and water hyacinth leaf meal as dietary protein source for major carp try. The control diet was prepared using fish meal as sole source of protein. Fish meal (grade A) was purchased from local market. Both leucaena (Leuceene /eucocephala) and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) leaves were collected from BAU Cam- pus. For soaked leucaena meal. leaves collected were soaked in tap water at an ambient temperatu re of 25-28°C for 24 h. The leaves from a particular type of water hyacinth with a long and thin stem (Reza and Khan, 1981) were only coliected. Collected leaves were 1:111 sundried for 24 hours at 35-40^oC.
