Preparation of Upazila Land and Soil Resource Guide, Monohardi, NARSingdi

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Monohardi Upazila is situated in the northern part of Narsingdi district. It lies between 24º03´ and 24º16´ north latitude and 90º38´ and 90º49´ east longitude and covers an area of 19,360 ha. It lies in the physiography of Madhupur Tract (AEZ 28) and Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ 9). The upazila comprises of 11 unions and a pourosava having a population of 244,540 (2001). Four land types namely highland, medium highland, medium lowland and lowland were identified. The textural classes were sandy loam, loam, clay loam and clay. Ten soil groups were identified. Total 95 soil samples were collected and analyzed. It was found that soils of this upazila are deficient in N, P, K and B. Nine cropping patterns were found in the upazila. Fertilizer recommendations for suitable crops are given. Monohardi upazila was first surveyed in 1991 and updated in 2010.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Field survey was conducted on the basis of semi-detailed soil survey method. Interpretative soil and landform map was prepared using 1:50,000 aerial photographs. Soils were investigated following a catena and composite top soil samples were collected. The sampling frequency were 1 (one) sample per 200 ha, although more samples were taken wherever necessary according to complexity of soils. During survey crops, cropping patterns, soil management data were collected by physical observations and interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were analyzed for fertility assessment. Crop suitability for each land type was determined. Fertilizer recommendations for suitable crops were made. Final soil and landform map was made from the interpretative field map through verification by ground truthing and field checks. After compiling physical and chemical data sets the land and soil resource utilization guide was prepared.

Achievement/Findings:

Major land types recognized were highland (19.2%), medium highland (32.1%) and medium lowland (21.8%). Major textural classes identified loam (50.9%), clay loam (19.0%) and clay (8.4%). Major soil groups identified Belabo, Khilgaon, Sonatala, Silmandi, Lokdeo and Naraibag. Suitable crops were Jute (deshi, tosa), Boro rice (HYV and LIV), T. Aman rice (HYV and LIV), Aus (HYV and LIV), sugarcane, wheat, groundnut (rabi and kharif), mustard, soybean, kaun, jab, zinger, turmeric, cabbage, mango, jackfruit, papaya, bel, pineapple and guava. Major cropping patterns were Mustard-Boro rice-T. Aman rice (15.8%); Rabi vegetables-kharif vegetables (14.2%); Boro rice-Fallow (F)-T. Aman rice (10.3%); Rabi crops-Jute/T. Aman rice (9.8%); Boro rice-F-Deep water aman (9.3%); and Banana/papaya/guava/litchibarai/forest plants (5%). Fertilizer recommendations for 45 existing and potential crops of the upazila at high and medium yield goals and for 89 crops at high yield goal are given. Soils of this upazila are deficient in N, P, K and B. This guide can be used for determining flood, drought, water-logging and soil erosion. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resource's carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus situation.
