Effect of Variety and Boron on the Yield of Mustard in Haor Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the Komolbhog village under Kishoregong district, a Site of Farming system and Environmental studies (FSES) of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 2000 to February 2001 to find out the effect of boron on the yield of Mustard and popularize the improved varieties of mustard in haor areas of Bangladesh. Two factors -variety and boron level were Involved in the experiment. Five varieties namely Tori 7, Sampad, BINA Sharisha 3, BINA Sharisha 4 and BARI Sarisha 6, and three level of boron viz, 0, 2 and 4 kg ha^-1were consider as the experimental treatment. Results indicated that the highest yield was obtained from BINA Sharisa 4 with 2 kg Bo /ha after then yield decreased .The soil of haor area was found deficient in boron

Objectives:

the present study was undertaken to find out the agro - economic performance and popularize the improved variety of mustard in haor area of Bangladesh and to find out the effect of boron on the yield of mustard.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the three farmers' fields during November 2000 to February 2001 at Kamalbhog Site. Two factors - varieties namely- Tori 7, Sampad, BINA Sharisha 3, BINA Sharisha 4 and BARI Sarisha 6, and boron levels 0, 2 and 4 kg/ha were included in the experiment. The land was prepared through ploughing and followed by laddering. Fertilizers were applied at the rates of 80-60-40-20 kg/ ha as N-P₂0₅-K₂0-S. Half of urea, TSP, MP and gypsum were applied during final land preparation. Boron was applied as per treatment during final land preparation. Seeds were sown in 13-15 November, 2000 through broadcast method. Rest urea was top dressed after 25 days of sowing. One weeding was done before urea top dressing. Harvesting was done during 23 January to 12 February, 2001. Ten sample plants were collected from each plot to record the agronomic characters. The grain and straw yields were recorded from one sq.m area. The data were analyzed following randomized complete block design and mean differences among the treatment were adjudged by Dunkun's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) with the help of a computer package programme MSTAT-C.

Achievement/Findings:

The interaction effect of variety and boron levels on the yield and yield contributing characters of mustard in haor area. Results revealed that the effect of variety and boron level was significant for all the yield contributing characters viz. plant height, branches/ plant/, pod length, number of seeds/ pod, seed yield, and straw yield. The highest seed yield of 2.80 t/ ha was obtained due to the interaction of variety BINA 4 and 2 kg of boron/ ha. The lowest yield of 1.72 t/ ha was observed in Tori- 7 with control treatment (no application of boron.). It was further observed that the highest yield of Tori 7. was 2.65 t /ha with the application of 2 kg boron/ ha. The highest yield for the variety Shampad obtained was 2.60 t/ ha with 2 kg boron/ ha, and the lowest yield was obtained by control treatment (1.75 t /ha). Result revealed that the variety Tori 7, Shampad, BINA Sharisa 3, BINA Sharisa 4 and BINA Sharisa 6 produced the highest yield with 2 kg boron/ ha'. Results clearly indicated that the soil of haor area is deficient in boron and it has positive impact in increasing production and reducing sterility of pods and seeds.
