Survey, Collection and Evaluation of Superior Mandarin Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eighteen superior mandarin germplasm were collected from different hilly areas of Bangladesh and planted during 2007 to 2008 at HARS, Khagrachari. Among the 18 germplasm, 11 germplasm viz. CR Kha-001, CR Kha-002, CR Kha-003, CR Kha-004, CR Kha-005, CR Kha-006, CR Kha-007, CR Kha-008, CR Kha-009, CR Kha-010 and CR Kha-011 produced fruits during 2012-13. Among the fruit producing germplasm the tallest plant (340.0 cm) was found in CR Kha-005, while the shortest (251.5 cm) CR Kha-002. The base girth was found the highest (30.6 cm) in CR Kha-001. Among the germplasm life size was also varied significantly. The leaf length ranged from 6.1 cm (CR Kha-010) to 7.8 cm (CR Kha-002) and leaf breadth ranged from 3.4 cm (CR Kha-009) to 4.8 cm (CR Kha-001). The maximum number of fruits per plant (56.8) was observed in CR Kha-008 followed by CR Kha-001 (53.6) and the minimum number of fruits per plant (5.0) was recorded in CR Kha-009The maximum number of fruits per plant (56.8) was observed in CR Kha-008 followed by CR Kha-001 (53.6) and the minimum number of fruits per plant (5) was recorded in CR Kha-009.

Objectives:

To study the performance of superior mandarin germplasm at Khagrachari

To select outstanding mandarin germplasm with respect to yield and fruit quality.

To evaluate, characterize and document the mandarin germplasm for future utilization.

To develop more mandarin varieties having higher yield and good quality.

Methodology:

Eighteen superior mandarin germplasm were selected by survey from the hilly areas of Bangladesh and were collected at Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari. Scion were collected from the selected 18 mother plants of mandarin and grafting on to the one years old pummelo seedling. Among the lines CR Kha-001 to CR Kha-005 were planted in 2007 and other CR Kha-006 to CR Kha-018 were planted in 2008. The saplings were planted at a distance of 4 m x 4 m. Each plant was fertilized with 20 kg cow dung, 500 g urea, 300 g of TSP and 450 g of MoP twice before and after rainy season. The plants were irrigated at fifteen days interval from mid December to Mid April to flower retention and better fruit setting. The plants were attacked by leaf minor in July and November. To reduce the infestation Admair (1ml/L) was applied. Boudreaux mixture was applied to remove scab infestation in the trunk and primary branches. Data on plant height, base girth, canopy spreading on N-S & E-W direction (m), growth condition of plants, branching density, leaf length (cm), leaf breadth (cm), time of flowering, time of harvesting, number of fruits/plant, fruit weight (g), number of segments/fruit, TSS (%), edible portion (%),fruit shape, skin color, flesh color and organoleptic taste were recorded as per IPGRI descriptors during 2012-2013. The date were analyzed by MSTAT-C programme for interpretation the results properly.
