Evaluation of Exotic Carambola Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two exotic carambola lines were at the Fruit Research Farm, Horticulture Research Center, BARI, Gazipur during 2012-2013. The plant height, base girth and number of primary branches per plant were recorded 4.05 m, 57 cm and 4 in AC Ex-009, and 2.20 m, 33 cm and 3.5 in AC Ex-010, respectively. Vegetative flushes in both lines were emerged three times in a year (February, June and October) and flower bud emergence took place in August and late March. Fruits in both lines were harvested in January and June, 2013. The higher yield (16.75 kg) was manifested from AC Ex-010 as compared to that of AC Ex-009 (15.60kg). Fruit weight was found higher (156 g) in AC Ex-010 and lower (98.20 g) from AC Ex-009. Edible portion was recorded maximum (96%) in AC Ex-009. TSS in the fruit juice was 8.50% in AC Ex-009 and 7.97% in AC Ex-010. Fruit fly infestation was 3.33% in AC Ex-010 compared to 3.83% in AC Ex-009. Stem borer attack was present in both the lines. Disease incidence viz, die back was present in few terminal shoots of the germplasm (4.44% in AC Ex-009 and 3.56% in AC Ex-010) but not in severe.

Objectives:

To study the performance of exotic carambola germplasm at Gazipur

To select outstanding carambola germplasm with respect to yield and fruit quality.

To evaluate, characterize and document the carambola germplasm for future utilization.

To develop more carambola varieties having higher yield and good quality.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Center, BARI, Gazipur during 2012-2013 to evaluate the carambola lines. Two exotic lines of carambola namely AC Ex-009 and AC Ex-010 were collected from Australia and planted in the research field of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 1993. The plants were fertilized with cow dung (40 kg), urea (1 kg), TSP (500 g) and MOP (500 g) in two equal installments- one at the onset of rainy season and another at the end of rainy season. Intercultural operations such as weeding, spading, loosening of soil, irrigation were done as and when required. Fruit fly infestation, stem borer attack and die back were found and necessary plant protection measures were taken. Data on growth, flowering, harvesting, fruit characteristics and yield were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

The growth, yield and quality of both the germplasm AC Ex-009 and AC Ex-010 were good. Considering yield and single fruit weight the line AC Ex-010 was found superior, on the other hand the TSS content and edible portion of fruits AC Ex-009 was better. Hence both the germplasm were promising for future uses.
