The Effects of Common Carp (cyprinus Carpio) on the Water Quality and Growth of Co-inhabiting Carp Species in Different Polyculture Systems

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The project was mainly aimed at studying the impact of Chinese planktivorous carps on the electively indices and dietary overlap of Indian major carps in the polyculture systems of Bangladesh. After successful completion of two experiments in previous year, efforts have been made this year to see the influence of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) on the water quality, planktonic and benthic food organisms as well as on the growth of fishes, i.e., on the overall ecosystem of the fish ponds. There was no significant variation in the availability of nutrients in the ponds used for different culture systems. Presence of common carp improved the environmental conditions of other carps except rohu. Growth of filter feeding fishes like catla and silver carp were found to be enhanced when reared with only common carp. Rohu also showed better growth rate when reared with mrigal and common carp.

Objectives:

To study the impact of Chinese planktivorous carps on the electively indices and dietary overlap of Indian major carps in the polyculture systems of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in nine ponds of 100m² size and 1.5m depth located adjacent to the Faculty of Fisheries Building. The present trial started from the first week of July and the experiment continued until the end of December, 1992. All the ponds are rain-fed, well exposed to sunlight having no inlet and outlet. The ponds became filled with rain water in early June. The ponds were arbitrarily numbered as 1, 2, 3, ................. and 9. Ponds were prepared by liming with CaC0₃ at the rate of 250 Kq/ha, Pre-stocking fertilization was made by using 5,000 Kg/ha organic manure (cowdung), 125 Kg/ha urea and 100 Kg/ha TSP 10 days before stocking of fish. Fertilization was made fortnightly at the same rate after stocking of the fish and was continued until the termination of the experiment. Supplementary feed containing rice bran and soaked mustard oilcake at the ratio of 1: 1 was administered once daily at the rate of ;3% of the body weight of stocked fish. The quantity of feed application was adjusted every 15 days on the basis of the growth of fish. The fingerlings were stocked at the rate of 10,000 /ha on 20 July, 1992. Three culture systems involving rohu (Labeo rohita). catla ) Catla catla). mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) and Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) considered as treatement 1 (T₁) rohu, catla, silver carp and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) considered as treatment 2 (T₂) and rohu, catla, mrigal, silver carp and common carp considered as treatemen 3 (T₃) were triplicate in 9 ponds. Details of species combinations, stocking density and size of fingerlings of each species were recorded. Samples were collected once in every 7 days. Integrated water and soil samples for the measurement of different water and soil quality parameters were collected and studied upto 8 September, 1992. Both planktonic and benthic samples were collected and preserved at regular interval. The analyses of the samples are progressing satisfactorily. Fish samples were also collected fortnightly to determine the growth of fish using a cast net. Fish were measured to the nearest cm and weighed to the nearest g.
