Optimization of Fertilization Rate in the Pond Fish Culture Systems

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two sets of experiments, aimed at studying the combined effects of fertilizer treatments and species combinations of fishes on the growth and production of fish were carried out in 9 ponds to determine the optimum fertilization rate. In the first experiment, three fertilizer treatments involving both organic and inorganic origin and three culture systems with only Indian major carps, both silver and Indian major carps, and both silver and bighead with Indian major carps were used in triplicate. It was revealed that the growth of planktivorous fishes was better in treatment II where mixed fertilizers and four species polyculture were tried. Benthivorous fish mrigal showed higher growth in the same fertilizer treatment where five species polyculture was tried. In the second experiment, three fertilizer doses based on the dose of the treatment II in the first experiment were tried. It was revealed that treatment II contributed to higher production of fish in comparison to the other two treatments.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum dose of fertilizer for the maximum fish production in a semi-intensive culture system.

Methodology:

Experiment No.1. The experiment was carried out in 9 earthen rain-fed ponds having no inlets or outlets, each 0.01 ha in area and about 1.5m in depth. The experiment was continued for a period of 6 months from June to November, 1991. Pond were prepared by liming with CaC0₃ at the rate of 250 Kq/ha. Pre-stocking fertilization was made by using organic manure, the cowdung (5,000 kq/ha) and Urea (125 kg/ha") and TSP (100 kq/ha) one week before stocking. Three culture systems involving only Indian major carps (rohu, Labeo rohita; catla, Catla catla and mrigal, Cirrhinus mrigala), both silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and Indian major carps, and both sliver carp and bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) with Indian major carps were used in triplicate in 9 ponds. Three fertilizer treatments including only organic manure (10,000 kq/ha). both organic (50%) + inorganic (50%) and only inorganic (250 kg/ha Urea and 200 kg/ha TSP) were applied fortnightly. The ponds were stocked with fingerlings of the above carp species at a density of 20,000 ind/ha. Growth and production of fish for the various species combinations and fertilizer treatments were recorded.

Experiment No. 2. The experiment was conducted for a period of 6 months from July to December, 1992 in 9 ponds having an area of 0.0075 ha each. Fish fingerlings were stocked at the rate of 20,000 ind/ha. Three species of Indian major carps such as rohu (Labeo rohita), catla (Catla catla) and mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) and one species of Chinese carp such as silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) were stocked at the ratio of 6:6:6:7. The fertilizer rate used in the treatment II of the first experiment was considered as treatment I in this trial. For treatments II and III, 10% and 20% of the treatment I were increased respectively. These three treatments were used in triplicate. Fertilizers were applied fortnightly by broadcasting over the surface of water. The details of fertilizer treatments, species combinations and size on the fishes were recorded.
