Genetic Divergence in Cold Tolerant Irrigated Rice (oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic divergence of 58 cold tolerant irrigated rice genotypes was estimated using Mahalanobis's statistic (D²) and principle component analysis. The genotypes were constellated into 5 clusters. Cluster V included the maximum numbers of genotypes along with the highest intra-cluster value indicating highly diverged cluster. The maximum inter-cluster distance was found between cluster II and V. The genetically diverged genotypes in these distinct clusters could be used as parents in hybridization for getting the maximum variations in traits of interest in the segregating generations. Plant height, effective tillers/hill, grains/panicle and grain yield/hill were found to be the maximum contributors towards divergence. Genotypes having these characters would offer a good scope for the improvement of cold tolerant irrigated rice through rational selection. Furthermore, intermediate divergence of clusters II and V with III and I indicated the possibilities of obtaining high heterosis in yield as well as earliness in maturity coupled with other traits of interest in the crosses involving the genotypes of clusters II and V with those of clusters I and III.

Objectives:

To analyze the genetic divergence of 58 cold tolerant rice genotypes collected from different parts of the world to identify the diverged genotypes, which could be used as parents in developing cold tolerant irrigated rice in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Fifty-eight geographically diverged cold tolerant genotypes of irrigated rice from twelve countries were collected through germplasm exchange under International Cold Tolerant Rice Nursery programme of IRRI, Philippines and grown at BRRI Regional Station, Rangpur during Boro season in 2001. Rangpur is a cool prone area of Bangladesh. Forty-five days old seedlings were transplanted in a 5.4 m long one rows plot in RCB design with three replications using one seedling/hill with a spacing of 30 x I 0 cm for each genotype so that each genotype row experiences sufficient cold stress during early vegetative stage. Other cultural practices as recommended for irrigated rice were followed to raise the crop. Data from ten randomly selected plants were collected for plant height, days to heading, days to maturity, grains/panicle, sterility (%), 1000 grain weight and yield/hill. Seedling height was recorded during transplanting from five randomly selected seedlings from each genotype. Genetic diversity was studied following Mahalanobis's generalized distance (D²) extended. Canonical variate analysis was carried out for determining the group constellation and principle component analysis was done for graphical representation of the genotypes.
