Helminth Parasites of Certain Freshwater and Estuarine Fishes of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was made on helminthes parasites of seven species of freshwater catfishes and two species of estuarine fishes during the period from January 1991 through June 1992. A total of 24 species of helminthes comprising 12 species of digeneans, 6 species of cestodes and 7 species of nematodes from the 547 specimens of seven species of freshwater catfishes; and 8 species of helminthes consisting of 2 digenetic trematodes, 4 cestodes and 2 species of acanthocephalans could be recovered from 2 species of estuarine fishes. The maximum prevalence was found in Silonia silondia (91 %) and in estuarine fish it was observed 100% in Lates calcarifer. Parasites in general cause limited effects in fishes except Isparorchis hypse/obagri on catfish air bladder and larval cestodes on body cavity of L. ca/carifer. Parasites showed comparatively higher prevalence in winter and higher intensities in summer months.

Objectives:

To make a detailed study of helminth parasites of certain freshwater catfishes and estuarine fishes with their nature of infestation and effects on hosts.

Methodology:

Fish hosts were examined in the laboratory after bringing them in isolation in ice box. Host specimens were collected from January 1991 to June 1992 through field trips of different fishing centres and fish markets on the greater Mymensingh district. Estuarine fishes were collected mostly from Cox's Bazar, Chittagong and Teknaf. Some of the estuarine fishes were however, examined at the laboratory of the Marine Fisheries and Technological Station, Cox's Bazar of the Fisheries Research Institute after collection from the landing centres. Certain parameters, total length, sex and maturity of the fishes were noted. The detailed external and internal examination of fishes were made. Site of infection, number of parasites recovered, mode of attachment were also recorded. Prevalence(%) and intensity of infestation were calculated following standard method. Pathological changes, influence of parasitic infestation if any on the hosts were also noted.

Achievement/Findings:

Prevalence was higher during summer and lower in winter months, whereas mean intensity was higher in winter months. C. garua did not show distinct seasonal variation in infestation. On the contrary in O. pabda parasitic infestations were higher in winter and lower in summer whereas in E. vacha prevalence was higher and mean intensity was lower in females. However both prevalence and mean intensity were observed to be higher in winter months and lower in summer months.
