Seasonal Biology and Ecology of Procamallanus Heteropneustus (nematoda) in a Catfish Heteropneustes Fossills of Mymensingh, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Samples of singhi, Heteropheustes tassilis were examined for the gastro- intestinal nematode Procamallanus heteropneustus during the period from January - December 1991. The seasonal dynamics and the developmental stages of this worm were studied. Both larvae and the adult worms were present in the singhi throughout the year. The mean occurrence of the larvae shows a seasonal pattern having a higher level in summer and the minimum in winter months. The gravid females followed almost a similar pattern of abundance. However, the males showed a higher abundance in November and December, and the minimum in April but females showed higher in March and April, and the minimum in September.

Objectives:

To study the pattern and structure of infection, seasonal distribution shown by P. heteropneustus.

Methodology:

To collect the materials and data the experimental singhi fish were collected in living condition from the different fish markets and catching centres of Mymensingh district. Samples are made weekly and 30 fishes were examined in each sample. Water temperature, data of collection, total length and sex of host were noted. The alimentary canal was then opened longitudinally and searched for parasites under binocular microscope. The collected materials were fixed in Berland's fluid, mounted in glycerin jelly and examined under microscope. To study the pattern of infection, number of infected/uninfected hosts were recorded. Number of parasites and their site of infection in the alimentary canal were also noted.

Achievement/Findings:

Interspecific competition and selection of different sites by different maturation stages were suggested as the factor involved in the seasonal changes in distribution. Neither of these reasons seem likely for P. heteropneustus in singhi, it would also be necessary to investigate the particular food habit of sing hi through which adult worms might directly transmitted to host stomach. However, since the change in distribution follows the seasonal change in water temperature, a possible hypothesis according to Skorping, 1980 is that the temperature affects the optimal environment of the nematode, and that the change in distribution is an adptation to a seasonal change in the parasite's optimal environment.
