Genetic Variability, Character Association and Path Coefficient Analysis in Wheat (triticum Aestivum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty genotypes of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were evaluated for some source-sink characters to find out the variability, heritability, correlation and direct and indirect effects of wheat on yield. Significant variations were observed among the genotypes for dry weight of leaf, stem and leaf sheath, flag leaf area, spike length, spikelets per spike, grains per spike, 100-grain weight, harvest index and grain yield. High heritability with genetic advance was observed for all the characters except spike length and spikelets per spike. However, dry weight of green leaf, stem and leaf sheath, flag leaf area, grains per spike, 100-grain weight and grain yield per plant had high genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) indicating a scope for improvement of these characters through direct selection. High estimates of heritability along with genetic advance in percentage of mean for the aforesaid traits were very high which indicate that improvement of these characters would be effective through phenotypic selection. Grain yield per plant was positively correlated with spike length, 100-grain weight and harvest index.

Objectives:

To find out suitable criteria for higher grain yield of wheat through studies on variability and inter relationship between yield and yield components in wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out during Rabi (winter) 2000-2001 involving 22 varieties/advanced lines at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Randomized Complete Block Design was used with three replications. The unit plot size was 2.4 x 2.0 m with 20 cm spacing and seeds were sown in continuous rows. All standard cultural operations were done as and when required. Data were collected from 10 randomly selected plants of each plot. Dry weight of green leaf, dry weight of stem and leaf sheath, flag leaf area, spike length, spikelets per spike, grains per spike, 100-grain weight, harvest index and grain yield were estimated. Genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic (PCV) coefficient of variation were estimated. Broad sense heritability and genetic advance (GA) were estimated using the methods.

Considerable improvement in grain yield might be possible through selection based on the above traits. Genetic study of yield components will thus be helpful in formulating an efficient breeding program for wheat.
