Determination of Suitable Harvesting Schedule for Maximum Production of Tubificids

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted for 100 days to culture Tubificids in a medium containing 35% wheat bran, 25% cow dung, 20% mustard oil cake and 20% fine sand. Fifteen, 30,45 and 60 mg Tubificids/cm²/10 days were harvested from four different treatments respectively. Among the harvesting schedules tested, 45mg/cm²/10 days proved significantly better quantity of harvest.

Objectives:

To identify the intervals and quantity of harvest to maximise the production.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the out door culvert system of the Department of Fisheries Biology and Limnology, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural Univesity, Mymensingh. Twelve cemented culverts (160 x 25 x 10 cm) constructed in a shaded area and protected from rain, hazards, sunlight and other natural calamities were used for the experiment. They were divided into four treatments each having three replications. Culverts were connected by stopcock to a water tank that was fed with water from a deep well. Each of the culvert was provided with an outlet at the bottom of it for the convenience of draining out the water from the culverts. The media used in the experiment were composed of 35% wheat bran, 25% cow dung, 20% fine sand and 20% mustard oil cake. The required amount of ingredients were measured by a laboratory balance on a proportional basis to make up 1000 g of media for each culvert and mixed thoroughly by hand with sufficient amount of water in a plastic container. The mixture was kept in this form for three days before putting into the culverts. Subsequent mixing was done twice a day to enhance decomposition. Tubificids (seed) were collected from Bangladesh Agricultural University campus. They were washed and kept under tap water in the laboratory for 24 hours before inoculation. Media were introduced and the water flow was adjusted 24 hours before inoculation of worms. Tubificids were inoculated at the rate of 0.5 mg/cm²(i.e., 2 g/culvert; mean individual live weight 2.64 ± 1.25 mg) over the media as homogeneously as possible. Continuous water flow was maintained to keep the dissolved oxygen above 3 mg/1, water depth over the media was maintained at 3 cm by depth regulator. A weekly measurement of D.O. and pH was carried out with the help of an oxygen meter and a pH meter respectively. The temperature of the water of culverts and in atmosphere was measured by a thermometer (made in China, 0383-L10 model) twice a day in a celsius scale. The prepared media were introduced at the rate of 250 mg/cm² in respective culverts once in every 10 days between 8 and 10 a.m. Total quantity of media were spread throughout the culverts. During introduction of media water supply was stopped.
