Effects of Isoprotein Diets of Different Sources on Pangasius Growth in Floating Net Cages

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A trial with Pangasius pangasius of initial average weight 354.2 ± 5.1 g under equal stocking density was conducted in synthetic floating net cages of size 2.0 m x 1.5 m x 1.5 m. The sesame meal and mustard oil cake containing diets showed significantly better growth, food conversion ratio (FCR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) compared to the commercial diet of similar protein content.

Objectives:

To examine the suitability of sesame meal and mustard oilcake as the protein source in the diets.

Methodology:

Nine net cages of size 2.0 m x 1.5 m x 1.5 m were made of synthetic net of mesh size 1.0 cm. They were fixed in a pond in such a position that one meter was kept above the water so that the effective size of each cage was 2.0 m x 1.5 m x 1.0 m. Five fishes of the same age group from a stocking pond were then randomly assigned to each of the nine cages. Three different diets of similar protein level (approximately 30%) but of different sources were used. In diet 1,25% of the total dietary protein was replaced by sesame meal and the same percentage was replaced by mustard oil cake in diet II. Diet III was a commercial feed manufactured by Saudi-Bangia Fish Feed Ltd., Bhaluka, Mymensingh. Each diet was supplied to three replicate cages in pellet form. Earthen circular plates locally called "Sanki" were used as feeding trays which were hung loosely in the cages at a depth of 0.5 m. Diets were supplied twice daily at 0900 hand 1700 h at the rate of 5% body weight. The ingredients and formulated diets were subjected to proximate composition analysis.Total body weight of individual fish was recorded fortnightly. Water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH were monitored fortnightly and water temperature (DC) daily. The data obtained were statistically analysed with the help of completely Randomized Design and then Duncan's New Multiple Range Test at 0.05 probability.

Results of the present experiment proved the laboratory formulated feeds better than the commercial feed having the same protein percentage (approximately 30%) so far as the fish growth FCR and PER are concerned.
