An experiment was conducted at the experimental field of, RHRS, Comilla during July 2011 to October 2012 with the aim at finding out the suitable dragon fruit variety for Bangladesh. An experiment was conducted at the experimental field of, RHRS, Comilla during July 2011 to October 2012 with the aim at finding out the suitable dragon fruit variety for Bangladesh. Data on floral, fruit and yield attributes were evaluated. The evaluation revealed that the tallest plant (3.50 m) was recorded in HU Joy-005 at harvest while the shortest plant in HU Joy-003 (2.50 m). Flowering time varied from May 30 (HU Joy-002) to September 24 (HU Joy-001). Flower length varied from 26 cm (HU Joy-003 and HU Joy-005) to 32 cm (HU Joy-004). Irrespective of germplasm number of calyx, petals and stigma’s segments was 67.88, 20 and 26.88, respectively. Fruit was harvested from 14 July (HU Joy-001) to 23 October (HU Joy-006). Heavier fruit was harvested from HU Joy-008 (478.0 g) and the lighter fruit (218.0 g) from HU Joy-003 and HU Joy-006. The highest TSS (19.0%) was found in HU Joy-008 and the lowest (14.5%) in HU Joy-002 and HU Joy-006. The edible portion was recorded the highest (82.65%) in HU Joy-001, and the lowest (55.50%) in HU Joy-006.

To study the performance of dragon fruit germplasm in Comilla region.

To evaluate, characterize and document the physico-morphological characteristics of dragon fruit.

To select a suitable dragon fruit germplasm for release as a variety in respective to higher yield and good quality fruits. 

The experiment with eight genotypes of dragon fruits collected from the different parts of the country was conducted at Regional Horticulture Research Station, Comilla to find out the growth behavior of dragon fruit during July 2011 to October 2012. The saplings were transplanted in July, 2011 maintaining a spacing of 2.5 × 2.0 m. Manures and fertilizers were applied @15 kg cowdung, 300 g TSP and 250 g MoP per pillar during pit preparation. After one month of transplanting, 100 g of urea were applied and subsequently it was continued with urea @200 g per pillar at an interval of 3 months. The vines were supported individually by RCC pillar of 2 m height from the base and consisted of motorcycle tyre at the top. During reproductive stage the manures and fertilizers were applied @20 kg cowdung, 1000 g urea, 1500 g TSP and 500 g MoP per pillar. Fertilizers were applied in four installments. The first installment (40 % urea, 30% TSP and all the cowdung) was applied immediately after the last harvest of the previous season (October), the second (30% urea, 20% TSP, 15% MoP) in two months later (December), the third (10% urea, 40% TSP, 40% MoP) just before flowering (Late March) and the fourth containing the remaining fertilizers was applied during the development of fruits (Late May). Data on plant, flower and fruit characteristics were recorded for statistical analysis.

From the above results, it was concluded that the climatic condition of Comilla is suitable for dragon fruit cultivation.  Considering the fruit size, individual fruit weight, edible portion, TSS% and color the dragon fruit genotype HU Joy-008 was supposed to be superior and might be release as a variety.
