Culture of Rotifer for Feeding Fish Fry

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Monoculture of Brachionus calyciflorus and Asplanchna priodonta have been done in plastic buckets using Baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as food for rotifer after collecting seeds of rotifer from ponds. Cultured rotifers, B. calyciflorus and A. priodonta were used as food for rearing fry of Clarias gariepinus. Correlation coefficients of B. calyciflorus (cells/l. air temperature (^OC), and pH of experiment-I have been found to be highly significant in most cases at 1 % and 5% levels. Correlation coefficients of A. priodonta (cells/l), air temperature (^OC), water temperature (^OC), and pH of experiment-II have been found to be highly significant in most cases at 1 % level. The average survival rate of fish fry at the end of rearing for 26 days was 40%.

Objectives:

To study the culture of rotifer as live food for larvae of different fishes and shrimps.

Methodology:

The seeds of rotifer were collected from ponds through selective netting with plankton nets of different mesh sizes (55μ, 90μ, and 150μ). The seeds of rotifer were cultured in plastic buckets (36 litre). Continuous aeration for 24 hrs. by air pumps was arranged. Baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was used as food for the rotifer cultured. Baker's yeast was given daily at the rate of 0.15g (1.5 billion cells) per litre of water. Air and water temparature (^OC) were recorded every day by using a maximum and minimum thermometer. pH was determined by using pH-indicating paper. In Experiment I, Monoculture of B. calyciflorus was done in three Plastic buckets (36 litre) for 36 days, and in Experiment II, Monoculture of A. priodonta was done in two plastic buckets (36 litre) for 36 days. For feeding trials magur fry (Clarias gariepinus) were reared for 26 days in six small plastic dishes (6 litre) and live rotifers, B. calyciflorus and A. priodonta, were given everyday as food. Ten fry were reared in each of the dishes. Light aeration by air pumps for several hours was arranged for the fry-rearing plastic dishes. Samplings of the rotifers, B. calyciflorus and A. priodonta, were done everyday from each of the plastic buckets to study under a compound microscope using a special zooplankton counting cell to observe the animals and to determine its concentration (cells/litre).
