Collection and Evaluation of Dragon Fruit Germplasm at Hars, Khagrachari

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out at the Hill Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Khagrachari during July 2011 to December 2012 to evaluate 4 dragon fruit genotypes. Among the germplasm the tallest plant (3.9 m) was recorded in MU Kha-003 while the shortest (3.2 m) in MU Kha-001. The number of side segments/plant was ranged from 4 (MU Kha-002) to 8 (MU Kha-001). Irrespective of germplasm flower initiation took place at mid May and the anthesis was done in first June. Average number of calyx, petals and stigma’s segments was 71, 20 and 35, respectively. The length of flower varied from 28 cm to 30 cm. Fruit become matured after 33 days of anthesis in MU Kha-001 and 42 days in MU Kha-002. The heaviest fruit 9320 g0 in MU Kha-001, while the lightest (280 g) in MU Kha-002. The weight of pulp and skin as well percent edible portion were recorded maximum (270.87 g, 49.13 g and 84.65%, respectively) in MU Kha-001, while those were minimum (2344.80 g, 45.20 g and 83.86%, respectively) in MU Kha-002. The highest amount of TSS (12.20%) was found in MU Kha-001 and the lowest (11.50%) in MU Kha-002.

Objectives:

To study the performance of dragon fruit germplasm in Chittagong Hill Tract.

To evaluate, characterize and document the physico-morphological characteristics of dragon fruit.

To select a suitable dragon fruit germplasm for release as a variety in respective to higher yield and good quality fruits.

Methodology:

The experiment with four genotypes of dragon fruits collected from the HRC, BARI, Gazipur and ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati, at Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari to study the performance during July 2011 to December 2012. The saplings were transplanted in July, 2011 maintaining a spacing of 2 × 2 m. Manures and fertilizers were applied @15 kg cowdung, 300 g TSP and 250 g MoP per pillar during pit preparation. After one month of transplanting, 100 g of urea were applied and subsequently it was continued with urea @200 g per pillar at an interval of 3 months. The vines were supported individually by RCC pillar of 2 m height from the base and consisted of motorcycle tyre at the top. During reproductive stage the manures and fertilizers were applied @20 kg cowdung, 1000 g urea, 1500 g TSP and 500 g MoP per pillar. Fertilizers were applied in four installments. The first installment (40 % urea, 30% TSP and all the cowdung) was applied immediately after the last harvest of the previous season (October), the second (30% urea, 20% TSP, 15% MoP) in two months later (December), the third (10% urea, 40% TSP, 40% MoP) just before flowering (Late March) and the fourth containing the remaining fertilizers was applied during the development of fruits (Late May). Data on plant growth, flowering and fruit characteristics were recorded for statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering plant growth, flowering and fruiting indicating that the soil and climate of Khagrachari is suitable for dragon fruit cultivation. Considering bearing habit, flowering time and fruit characteristics i,e fruit weight, fruit size, edible portion and fruit quality, the germplasm MU Kha-001 was performed better and may be released as an elite fruit variety.
