Evaluation of Poultry Feather Meal as a Dietary Protein Source for Indian Major Carp, Labeo Rohita (hamilton) Fry

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The suitability of poultry feather meal (PFM) as a substitute for dietary fish meal protein in the diet of Indian major carp, Labeo rohita was evaluated. Four experimental diets were formulated containing 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% PFM as test protein. The control diet was prepared with fish meal as the sole source of protein. All the diets were isonitrogenous with 30% protein. A nine-week long trial was conducted under laboratory condition. There was no significant differences between growth responses of carp fry fed control, 25% PFM and 50% PFM diets but growth in these diets were significantly higher than rest of the diets. The poorest response was observed at 100% PFM diet. Similar trends were also observed in food conversion and protein utilization. The result of the present study showed that hydrolyzed poultry feather meal could be used at 20% of dietary level (i.e., upto 50% of total dietary protein) for L. rohita fry without compromising growth and food conversion.

Objectives:

To evaluate the suitability of poultry feather meal as a substitute for dietary fish meal protein for fry of Indian major carp, Labeo rohita (Hamilton).

Methodology:

Poultry feather was collected from BAU poultry farm. A special processing technique was followed to convert poultry feather into meal since unprocessed poultry feathers cold not be digested by single stomach animals. The feathers were hydrolyzed by cooking under pressure at 130°C for two and a half hours. After cooking, the material was dried out at about 60°C in a thermostatic oven and ground to pass a 200 um screen. Four isonitrogenous diets were formulated to evaluate poultry feather meal (PFM) as dietary protein source for carp fry. The control diet was prepared with fish meal as the sole source of protein. Fish meal (grade A) was purchased from the local market. All the dietary ingredients were analyzed for proximate composition and mineral content prior to the formulation of diets. Poultry feather meal was tested at four inclusion levels (25%. 50%,75% and 100% replacement of fish meal protein). The diets were prepared by mixing the dry ingredients, followed by the addition of oil and water until a stiff dough was obtained. The moist diet was extruded through a mincer with a 2.0 mm die. The resulting pellets were then sundried at about 35-45°C. The pellets were ground by hand mortar and sieved to obtain particle sizes ranging between 0.3 and 0.5 mm. Fish fry (mean weight 1.02 g) were randomly distributed at a rate of thirty fish per tank and three replicate tanks were used for each experimental diet. All fish were fed four times daily at three hourly intervals between 08.00 and 17.00 hours at a fixed feeding rate of 5% body weight per day. The feeds were slowly administered into the tanks and the feeding behaviour and acceptability of the diets were observed. The total biomass of the fish from each tank was weighed at weekly intervals and the feeding rates were adjusted accordingly. To maintain good water quality, water was changed in each tank at weekly intervals.
