Determination of Health Status and Planting Value of Okra (abelmoschus Esculentus) Seed Collected from Different Sources

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of seed borne fungal pathogen on the planting value of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) seeds collected from five different sources was studied at the seed pathology centre of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during March 2002 to March 2003. Seven genera of seed borne fungal pathogens were observed to be commonly associated with okra seeds. Aspergillus spp., Alternaria spp., Collectotrichum spp., Curvularia spp., Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., and Rhizopus spp .. Among the pathogens, Aspergillus flavus was highly prevalent in the seeds ranging from 3-21 % depending on the sources. Consequences of the seed borne pathogens on the subsequent germinating seeds and seedlings were determined. Germination and seedling vigour of okra seeds were variably affected depending on the seed source and variety. The minimum germination of 52.5% in okra seeds retained by the farmer was recorded. Germination test through Blotter method showed that BADC seeds performed better (88%) than the seeds of all other sources and in vigour test, the highest seedling length (23 cm) was measured in BRAC seeds. In both the cases, length and dry matter weight of BRAC seeds showed greater seed vigour than the seeds of all other sources.

Objectives:

To determine the seed borne fungal pathogens associated with the Okra seeds and to evaluate the planting value of the seeds collected from different sources.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the Seed Pathology Center (SPC) of the Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during March 2002 to March 2003. Okra seeds were collected from five sources viz. Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC), Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), Local Seed Companies (LSC), Local Seed Traders (LST) and Farmers (F). About 100-250 g seeds were collected from each source and preserved in brown paper bags under laboratory conditions for subsequent use during the experimental works. For seed health test, standard blotter method was practiced in the laboratory following the rules of seed health test recommended by ISTA. For germination test, samples of 400 seeds were tested in blotter and earthen plot. Germination of the seeds were also recorded through pot experiment. Seed vigour was determined following two methods- seedling length measurement method and seedling dry weight method. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) with four replications. Data were analyzed using statistical package program MSTAT-C to illustrate the statistical significance of the experimental results. The means for all the treatments were calculated and the analysis of variance for all the components was performed by F-variance test. The significance of differences between the pairs of treatments mean was evaluated by DMRT.

BADC okra seeds showed high germination level though it possessed high prevalence of seed borne fungi. BRAC okra seeds yielded comparatively less germination in spite of lower prevalence of seed borne fungi. Farmer seeds yielded the least germination and it possessed the highest prevalence of seed borne fungi. In spite of high prevalence of seed borne fungi, seed trader seed showed high germination. Though germination was less, BRAC okra seed performed the best in respect of growth and/vigour. Farmer's and seed traders seeds are not suitable for planting at all.
