Machining Properties of Ten Village Tree Species

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effects of machining properties, viz., sawing, planing, shaping, boring, mortising, turning and finishing on the village tree species, mango (Mangifera indica), jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), neem (Azadirachta indica), ghora neem (Melia azedarach), raintree (Samanea saman), mander ( Erythrina orientalis), painya mander (Erythrina fusca), babla (Acacia nilotica sub. Sp. indica), sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo) and tentul (Tamarindus indica) were studied. The sawing qualities were determined by manual feeding of logs to the saw blade and graded into three categories: difficult, medium and easy to saw. In machining and hand tools operation the evaluation was based on frequency of occurrence of defect-free samples. The defects were visually observed and the percentage of defect-free samples were determined. Finishing qualities were also evaluated with the application of three different types of polishing materials, viz., shellac, carpa and epoxy. The results are of indicative value only and provides data of their potential suitability for certain uses.

Objectives:

To assess the suitability of ten village tree species, viz., mango (Mangifera indica), jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), neem (Azadirachta indica), ghora neem (Melia azedarach), raintree (Samanea saman), mander ( Erythrina orientalis), painya mander (Erythrina fusca), babla (Acacia nilotica sub. sp. indica), sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo) and tentul (Tamarindus indica) for furniture and construction purposes.

Methodology:

The logs of ten village species viz., mango (Mangifera indica), jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), neem (Azadirachta indica), ghora neem (Melia azedarach), raintree (Samanea saman), mander ( Erythrina orientalis), painya mander (Erythrina fusca), babla (Acacia nilotica sub. sp. indica), sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo) and tentul (Tamarindus indica were procured from the villages of Chittagong, Rajshahi and Dinajpur. These were converted to 25.4 mm planks. Three grades of sawing, viz., difficult, medium and easy were recorded on the variation of density, grain orientation and the load applied to the saw blade.The planks were kiln dried to a 12% moisture content level and further dressed to 20 mm thickness. Twenty samples of 20 mm x 100 mm x 900 mm dimensions were made out of each species. All the test samples were taken to be sound, free from all defects including knots, stain, incipient decay surface checks and splits. Prior to conducting the tests, these samples were again converted to smaller pieces suitable for different experimental conditions.The working properties were carried in two different methods, viz., machine and hand tools. Ten samples were tested with machine and ten samples with hand tools. After completion of each test, the samples were examined visually to sort out the defect-free samples. In each test the samples were examined for torn grain, fuzzy grain, raised grain, chipped grain, chip mark, tear out, broken corner and roughness. The percentage of defect free sample was considered to be the measure of the machining and working qualities. The tests were carried out in accordance with ASTM standards: D-1666-64; 1971 with certain deviation because of limitations of available equipment. Similar tests were carried out using carpenter’s hand tool.Three types of polish, viz., shellac, carpa and epoxy were applied and performance was recorded on the basis of gloss attainment.

Achievement/Findings:

Five species, viz., mandar, painya mandar, raintree, mango and ghora neem are found to be easy in respect of sawing. Jackfruit is medium while neem, babla , sissoo and tentul are difficult in sawing.
Machining and handtools operations indicate that neem, ghora neem, jackfruit, raintree, babla and sissoo are suitable for furniture, cabinet, joinery works. Neem, tentul, jackfruit and babla are acceptable in turnery works.In the finishing operation neem, ghora neem, jackfruit, raintree and babla show excellent finishing qulity. Other five species are found to be poor in respect of finishing properties.
