Machining and Handtool Properties of Five Mangrove Species

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study reports the machining and hand tool properties of five mangrove species, viz., sundry (Heritiera fomes), passur (Xylocarpus mollucensis), kankra (Bruguira conjugata), gewa (Excoecaria agallocha) and baen (Avicennia officinalis). The evaluation was based on the frequency of occurrence of defect-free samples after machining and hand tool operations. The results are of indicative value only and may be of use when these particular types of properties are needed.

Objectives:

To assess the suitability of five mangrove species, viz., sundry (Heritiera fomes), passur (Xylocarpus mollucensis), kankra (Bruguira conjugata), gewa (Excoecaria agallocha) and baen (Avicennia officinalis) for furniture and construction purposes

Methodology:

The logs of five mangrove species viz.,sundry (Heritiera fomes), passur (Xylocarpus mollucensis), kankra (Bruguira conjugata), gewa (Excoecaria agallocha) and baen (Avicennia officinalis) were procured. These were converted to 25.4 mm thick planks by plain sawing and then kiln-dried to 12% moisture content. The dried planks were dressed and 20 samples of 19.05 mm X 127.00 mm X 1219.20 mm in size were prepared from each species. All the test samples were sound, free from all defects including knots, stain, incipient decay, surface checks and end splits. Prior to conducting the tests, samples were converted to smaller pieces suitable for different experimental conditions.The tests were carried out in two different methods, viz. machines and hand tools. Ten samples were tested with machines and ten samples with hand tools. After completion of each test, the samples were examined visually to sort out the defect free samples. In both the tests, the samples were examined for torn grain, fuzzy grain, raised grain, chipped grain, tear out, broken corner and surface roughness. After a complete test run in machines and hand tools, the percentage of defect free samples were determined. These data were considered to be the measure of the machining and hand tool qualities.The tests were carried out in accordance with ASTM: D-1666-64, 1969 with certain deviations because of limitations of available equipment. Similar tests were carried out by using carpenter hand tools.

Achievement/Findings:

Planing

In machining test, kankra showed fair planing quality. Passur, gewa, baen and sundri showed poor planing quality. Only baen showed poor planning quality. It indicated that the handtools respond better than the machine in planing of these five mangrove species.

Shaping

In machining test, kankra showed good shaping quality. Gewa, baen and passur showed fair, whereas sundri showed poor shaping quality. In handtool test sundri, passur and gewa showed fair shaping quality. And baen indicated fair shaping quality whereas gewa showed poor shaping quality.

Boring

In boring test by machine, passur and kankra indicated good boring quality whereas sundri, kankra and baen showed fair quality. In handtood test, good boring quality found for sundri, passur and kankra. Gewa and baen showed fair boring quality.

Mortising

Sundri and passur showed good mortising quality, whereas gewa, kankara and baen showed fair in machining test. In handtool test, only sundri showed excellent mortising quality. Passur, kankra and baen showed good and gewa showed poor mortising quality.

Turning

In turning test by machine, gewa scored good, passur showed fair, kankra showed poor whereas sundri and baen showed very poor turning quality.
