Correlated Response and Path Analysis in Mustard, Brassica Campestris

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

ln 43 strains/cultivars of mustard (Bral·sica campeslris L. var. Toria and Yellow sarson) grown in two consecutive cropping seasons the heritability (broad sensee) and genetic advance (%> were found to be due to additive gene effect and highest for number of pods on primary branch/ plant. High heritability and low genetic advance, mostly due to dominance and epistatic genes, were found in 1000-seed weight. Correlated response values were highest for 1000-seed weight (0.188). followed by pods on primary branch/ Plant (0.1 81). The relative selection efficiency was found to be maximum for these two characters also (0.783 and 0.754, respectively). Path analysis revealed that except seeds/pod all the other characters had positi ve direct effects on yield. Seeds/Pod, however, was not related to yield or any other character directly. Except for seeds/pod selection may be carried out for five characters. However, selection for pods on primary branch/plant and 1000-seed weight may be given top priority for increasing seed yield of mustard.

Objectives:

To find out the most important selection criteria using correlation and path coefficient analyses in diverse germplasm of mustard, a major edible oil yielding crop in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The materials consisting of 43 strains/cultivars of mustard (Brassica cam pestris L. var. Toria and Yellow sarson) were grown in a randomized block design with three replications at BINA farm, Mymensingh during the winter seasons of 1982-83 and 1983-84. The unit plot size was 9m² with a spacing of 25 x 5 cm between rows and plants, respectively. From each plot 20 plants at maturity were randomly sampled to record observations on plant height (cm), primary branch/plant, pods on primary branch/plant, pods on secondary branch/plant, seeds/pod, 1000-seed weight (g) and seed yield (g/ ha). Genetic advance, expressed as percentage of mean and heritability (h2) in the broad sense was worked out, respectively. Correlations, correlated response and relative selection efficiency were also worked out. Path coefficients for the relationship were obtained by solving simultaneous equations which express the basic relationship between correlation and path coefficients.
