Study of Genetic Variability in Crossed Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, Shibganj, Bogra during rabi season, 2013-2014 to create genetic variability in onion for future breeding program. The F₁ bulbs (viz. BP-1x BP2,BP-1xBP-3, BP-1xBP-4, BP-1xBP-5, BP-4xBP-1, ?BP-4x BP-2, BP-4xBP-3, BP-4x BP-5) were used in this study. The bulbs were planted on 20 November 2013 and seeds were harvested on 28 April 2014. Good seed settings were observed in all the crosses. Matured F₂ seeds were harvested and stored in refrigerator for further study. The higher amount of seeds (1000g/plot) was found from BO-4xBO-1 crossed bulb and the lowest (200g/plot) was found ?BO-4xBO-2 crossed bulb.

Objectives:

To develop genetic variability in onion for future breeding program and study the extent of variability in crossed onion genotypes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, Shibganj, Bogra during rabi season, 2012 -2013 to create genetic variability in onion. The crossing materials were BARI Onion-1 & 4 (winter type) and 2, 3 & 5 (summer type). BARI Onion-1 & 4 has good keeping quality but low yield compare to summer onion. BARI Onion-2, 3 & 5 is high yielding variety but keeping quality is very low than winter onion. The different crossed F₁ bulbs (viz. BO-1x?BO-2, BP-1xBO-3, BO-1xBO-4, BO-1xBO-5, BO-4xBO-1, BO-4xBO-2, BO-4xBO-3, BO-4xBO-5) were used in this study. The bulbs were planted on 20 November 2013 and seeds were harvested on 28 April 2014. The plot size was 1 m x 1 m having plant spacing of 25 cm x 20 cm. Onion was fertilized with recommended dose of cow dung 5 t/ha, N115, P54, K75, S20, Zn3 and B2 Kg/ha. Weeding was done at 25, 50, 75 & 100 days after planting. Irrigation was applied at 20, 40, 60, 80 & 100 days after planting. Fungicide (Ruvral @ 2.5 g/l) was sprayed at 15 days interval starting from 60 day after planting. Insecticide (Admare @ 0.5 ml/l) was sprayed at 15 days interval starting from 90 day after planting. Pollination was done by insect within the net. At maturity, the mature seeds were harvested. Data on total amount of seed (g/plot) and germination percentage were collected from different crossing materials.

Achievement/Findings:

Bulb of all crosses showed good seed settings. At maturity, seeds were harvested, processed and kept in refrigerator for further study. The mean performance of harvested seeds is given showed higher amount of seeds (100g/plot) with BO-4xBO-1 and the lowest (200g/plot) from BO-4xBO-2. The highest amount of seed (200g/plot) and germination (88%) was obtained from BARI Onion-4 x BARI Onion-1 crossed bulbs and the lowest the (60g/plot) from BARI Onion-1 x BARI Onion-2. The germination varied from 72-88%.
