A laboratory growth trial was conducted to evaluate six test diets for Indian major carp, Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton) fringerling (mean weight 3.93 g, SO ± 0.02 g). The diets were formulated with a microcomputer using Linear Programming by combining different feed ingredients e.g., fish meal, poultry offal meal (paM), silkworm pupae meal (SWP) and soaked leucaena meal (LM). For all the six diets, rice bran and/or wheat bran were used as dietary carbohydrate source. The control diet (diet 1) was prepared with fish meal as the sole source of protein. Ail the diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous with 39-40% protein. The experiment was conducted with three replications for each treatment. The best growth response was observed at diet 2 (paM 31.13% + SWP 13.87%) followed by diet 4 (paM 25.33% + SWP 20.00%). The use of leucaena meal at diets 3 (paM 30.28% + LM 44.23%),5 (paM 11.10% + SWP 20.00% + LM 45.64%) and 6 (paM 15.34% + SWP 20.00% + LM 34.66%) has significantly (P<0.05) reduced the growth response and food utilization by fish compared to diets containing paM and SWP. However, the performance of the above diets were not significantly (P> 0.05) different from those of the control diets. The results of this study clearly indicate the superiority of poultry offal and silkworm pupae meal as dietary protein sources over fish meal. This study also domonstrates the usefulness of soaked leucaena meal (at 35-45% level of the diet) as dietary protein source for mrigel fingerling when used in ccombinations with poultry offal and/or silkworm pupae meal.

To formulate several test diets for C. mrigala fingerling by combining silkworm pupae meal, poultry offal meal and soaked leucaena leaf meal with the help of linear programming and their trial under laboratory condition.

An indoor aquarium reaing system with undergravel filter and recirculated water was used for the growth trial. Ninety six litre capacity rectangular glass aquaria containing 80 litres of water was used as experimental tanks. The major carp fingerling were purchased from local fish vendor and were acclimated to the laboratory condition for at least 15 days before the start of the experiment. Fish fingerling were treated with malachite green bath and were fed tetracyline to control fungal infection and prevent the outbreak of bacterial infection respectively. Six test diets including control were formulated in microcomputer (Amstrad PCW 8256) using a mathematical package entitled " Linear Programmingre". All the diets were formulated to contain 39 -40% protein, 10-14% lipid, 6-11 % crude fibre and 25-32 % digestible carbohydrate. While formulating the diets, mineral contents (Ca and P), essential amino acid and fatty acid contents of all dietary ingredients were taken into consideration. All the dietary ingredients were analysed for proximate composition and mineral content prior to the formulation of diets. Each diet was formulated to contain 0.5% chromic oxide to study protein digestibility. Fish fingerling (mean weight 3.93 g; SD ± 0.02) were randomly distributed at a rate of thirty fish per tank with two replications for each treatment. All fish were fed ad libitum two times daily seven days in a week between 09.00 and 17.00 hours for the whole experimental period of eight weeks and daily intake of feed was recorded. In order to maintain good water quality, water in each tank was changed twice in a week throughout the experimental period. Water quality parameters were monitored from each test tank at regular intervals. Temperature and pH were measured by Jenway microprocessor pH meter (Model 3100) and dissolved oxygen by Jenway oxygen meter (Model 9070). The ranges of the water quality parameters were temperature 26- 28°C; pH 7.8-8.54; dissolved oxygen 4.5 - 6.9 mg/l.

The results of this study clearly indicated the superiority of POM (processed by boiling) and SWP as dietary protein source over fish meal. This study also demonstrates the usefulness of soaked leucaena meal (at 35-45% level of the diet) as a dietary protein source for mrigel fingerling. Although the data on the protein utilization, histopatholoqv and blood parameters are yet to be reported, the results of this study showed that a feed formulated in combination with poultry offal, silkworm pupae and soaked leucaena may offer a viable alternative to fish meal based complete diet for mrigel fingerling.
