A feeding trial was conducted for a period of 70 days from 16th Oct. 1990 to 25th Dec. 1990. Performance of diets were evaluated on the basis of feed .acceptability, growth, food conversion and protein utilization. Silkworm pupae meal (SWP) was used at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% replacement level of fish meal for Clarias batrachus fry and fingerlings. Silkworm pupae meal was found to be a good dietary source of protein. Growth responses in terms of weight gain and food utilization in fish fed diet containing 100% SWP meal found to be similar to that of diet containing 100% fish meal. Apparent protein digestibility (APD) of the treatments were fairly high and ranged from 75.45% to 81 .94% where there was no significant difference in APDs of fishes fed diets containing 100% and 75% SWP meal and control diet. The economic analysis showed that the diet containing 100% SWP meal was the cheapest amongst all the diets and it costed least to produce unit biomass of fish.

1. Formulation of different experiment diets using various dietary ingredients such as fish meal, silkworm (Bombyx mort) pupae meal, poultry offal meal and blood meal; and 2. Feeding C. batrachus fry and fingerlings with various feed composition under laboratory to evaluate the efficiency of experimental diets.

Study was conducted to evaluate the effect of various palleted diets prepared with silkworm pupae (SWP) meal, poultry offal meal (POM) and blood meal (BM) as dietary protein sources for Clarias batrachus fry and fingerlings. Experimental system and animals: Static indoor rearing system was used to conduct the experiment. Twenty-litre capacity rectangular glass aquaria containing 15 litre of water were used as experimental tanks. All tanks were kept on 70 cm high cemented platform to facilitate better observation and accessibility. The fry were induced bred in the laboratory and used for the experiment. Some of them were maintained on artificial feed to grow upto fingerling stage and used for the experiment. Prior to the start of experiment, the fishes were acclimated to the laboratory condition feeding an artificial diet containing fish meal, rice bran and wheat bran (protein content 40%). Diet formulation and preparation: Six isonitrogenous diets including control (CO) were formulated to evaluate fish meal, SWP meal, POM and BM as dietary protein sources for Clarias batrachus fry and fingerlings. The control diet was prepared using SWP meal as sale source of protein (as the result of previous experiment). Fish meal (Grade A) was purchased from local market. Dry silkworm pupae (SWP) was collected from Bangladesh Sericulture Board, Rajshahi. Dry pupae were ground and sieved through sieve(# 500). Raw poultry offal was collected from Poultry Farm, BAU, Mymensingh, boiled, kept in oven at 50°C over night and then dried in air. Blood was collected from slaughter house of local market, kept in oven at 50°C overnight and then dried in air. After drying, both poultry offal and blood were ground and sieved (# 500). The dietary ingredients were analysed for proximate and mineral composition prior to the formulation of diets. All the diets were formulated to contain 35% protein. 9-11 % lipid, 5-10% crude fibre and 25-30% digestible carbohydrate. Efforts were made to keep the formulated diets as isoenergetic as far as possible. Chromic oxide (0.5%) was added to each dietary composition for the subsequent study of digestibility of protein.

The results of the present experiment indicate that the fish meal in the diet of C. batrachus can be completely replaced by SWP meal and blood meal and price of unit biomass of this fish can be considerably reduced. The production of silkworm pupae in Bangladesh is about 134 ton from which a considerable amount will be produced annually. Again, most of blood of slaughter house of Bangladesh are drained out. If the blood from the slaughter house is systematically collected and used to prepare feed with SWP meal as alternate sources of fish meal, then fish producers might get a cheaper feed than fish meal based diet. Therefore, small industries in North Bengal to produce silkworm pupae meal and to make blood meal producing factory to prepare formulated fish feed based on SWP meal and blood meal may be highly recommended.
