Substitution of Fish Meal by Various Protein Sources in Combination in the Diet of Catfish, (heteropneustes Fossilis)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A 60 day laboratory trial was conducted to evaluate various protein sources such as silkworm pupae, blood meal, mustard oilcake and sesame meal in combination as substitutes for fish meal in catfish (H. fossilis) diets. Five isonitroqenous (35% protein) diets were prepared and fed to fish (2.09 ± 0.01 g) with three replicates for each treatment. On the basis of the observed growth rate, food conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio and apparent net protein utilization diet 2 containing about 26% fish meal, 6% silkworm pupae meal, 2% blood meal, 10% sesame and 11 % mustard oilcake produced the best (P < 0.05) growth performance and food utilization. Diet 5 in which 100% of the fish meal was supplemented, resulted in the poorest performance. Apparent protein digestibility values for all the diets were fairly high ranging from 80.92 to 87.52%. The results of the present study demonstrated that the use of plant and animal proteins in various combination is more effective than that of a single source in the substitution of fish meal in catfish diet.

Objectives:

To replace fish meal in catfish (H. fossilis) diet by using both plant and animal proteins in different combinations.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted for a period of 60 days in a static indoor rearing system. Rectangular 55 L capacity glass aquaria containing about 50 L of water was used as experimental tanks. Adequate level of dissolved oxygen in each tank was maintained through aeration. Naturally bred catfish fingerlings were obtained from a local fish vendor. A constant 12h photoperiod of light and 12 h dark was maintained throughout the experiment. Five semi-purified isonitrogenous (35% protein) diets were formulated using various sources of proteins in different combinations. Fish meal was the sole source of protein in diet 1 and was obtained from Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC), Dhaka. Mustard oilcake (Brassica juncea) and seasame meal (Seasamum indicum) used in this study were of expeller type and were collected from local market. Silkworm pupae (Bombyx man) was collected from Rajshahi factory of the Bangladesh Sericulture Board. Blood meal was prepared from cow blood collected from slaughter house. Although wheat flour was used as carbohydrate source, the protein contributed by wheat flour was taken into account in formulating the experimental diets. Prior to formulation proximate composition analysis of the ingredients was performed . Formulated diets contained 0.5% chromic oxide was used to study protein digestibility. Experimental diets were subjected to proximate composition analysis and the results are presented. The water quality parameters were monitored weekly throughout the experimental period and were maintained as follows: temperature 25 to 30°C, pH 6.2 to 7.4 and dissolved oxygen 5.0 to 7.2 mg/I. Uniform sized fingerlings of catfish (H. fossilis) with a mean initial weight of 2.09 ± 0.01 g were randomly stocked at the rate of 12 fish per tank and there were 3 replicates per treatment. All the fish were fed to satiation level three times daily at 4.00 hourly interval between 9 .00h and 17 .00h. Faecal samples were gently siphoned from tanks once in the morning for last two weeks, dried in oven at 60°C and kept for subsequent analysis needed for protein digestibility study. At the end of the experiment 15 fish from each treatment (5 per replicate) including the control were sampled for proximate conposition analysis. Rest of the fish were sampled for histological study to assess changes in gills, liver, muscle, kidney and intestine.

It appears that substitution of fish meal by various plant and animal protein sources in different combination resulted in improved growth rate, food conversion and protein utilization compared to the fish meal based control diet.
