Performance of Some Guava Genotypes at Mymensingh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of 24 genotypes of guava were studied during November 2000 to September 2001. The highest fruit weight, length, breadth, weight of mesocarp and endocarp were observed in PG-026 (303.67 g, 8.77 cm, 7.99 cm, 160.67 g and 143.00 g, respectively) and the lowest in PG- 022 (31.00 g, 2.43 cm, 2.77 cm, 16.33 g and 14.67g, respectively). The maximum mesocarp thickness was recorded in PG-021 (1.87 cm) followed by PG-026 (1.47 cm) and PG-010 (1.40 cm) and the minimum in PG- 014 (0.43 cm), The endocarp thickness of different genotypes ranged from 1.20 cm (in PG-021) t05.10 cm (in PG-006). Number of seeds per fruit was the minimum in PG-021 (29.67) and the maximum in PG-O 13 (503.67). On the other hand, weight of seeds per fruit was the highest in PG-026 (4.84 g) and the lowest in PG-021 (0.31 g). Fruits of PG-028 gave the highest percentage of edible portion (99.55%) while PG-024 gave the lowest (95.98%). Based on the number of flowers, fruits, harvested fruits per plant, weight and size of fruit, thickness and weight of pulp, number and weight of seeds the genotypes PG-001, PG-002, PG-005, PG-007, PG-009, PG-025, PG-026 and PG-028 were found to be superior to others and may be recommended for varietal development.

Objectives:

To study the performance of 24 guava genotypes with a view to identify promising one(s) to be released as variety (ies).

Methodology:

An experiment was undertaken to study the performance of 24 guava genotypes at the Horticulture Farm of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 2000 to September 2001. The experimental area was under the sub-tropical climate, characterized by heavy rainfall during April-September and scantly rainfall during rest of the year. The soil of the experimental area was silty-loam in texture belonging to the old Brahmaputra flood plain with pH ranging from 5.5-6.8. The genotypes were collected from India, Bangladesh, Thailand and Indonesia. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. The 24 different guava genotypes comprised the 24 treatments of the experiment. For each treatment, three plants were selected. All the plants of each genotype were 5-7 years old. Irrigation along with other usual intercultural operations were done. Irrigation was continued at an interval of 15 days during fruit set (April- May). Fertilizers @ 260 g N, 320 g P₂O₅ and 160 g K₂O were applied per plant in two equal split doses as per recommendation. No disease was noticed in any experimental plant. However, preventive measures were taken by spraying Dithane M-45 periodically. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and were statistically analyzed with the help of a computer MSTAT-C Program developed. Mean separating was done following DMRT for interpretation of the results.
