Evaluation of Rambutan Germplasm at Khagrachari

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on Rambutan was conducted at HARS, BARI Khagrachari during April 2011 to September 2012 having two plants collected from Thailand marked as NL Kha-001, NL Kha-002. The overall growth of the plants were satisfactory as plant age i.e. plant height, base girth; number of primary branches; canopy spread was good. First flowering was observed at NL Kha-001 in mid April and finally 48 fully ripen fruits were harvested in early September, but the plant NL Kha-002 failed to produced any flowers and fruits. Days to harvesting from flowering was 138 days. The average fruit was 4.53 cm long, 3.45 cm wide and 27.54 g in weight with bright red skin occupied by long hair of same colour and the shape of the fruit was oval. The rind (pericarp) thickness was 0.2cm and stone, rind and aril weight was 1.30 g, 10.42 g and 13.72 g, respectively. The edible portion of fruit was found 49.82 % with 19.5% TSS. A total yield of 4.29 kg was obtained from the plant. The aril of fruits was off-white with pleasant flavor and excellent taste. No major pest and diseases were found in the crop.

Objectives:

To study the performance and adaptability of Rambutan in Khagrachari region
To asses the feasibility of Rambutan cultivation in the hilly areas of Bangladesh
Evaluate, characterized and documented the physico-morphological characteristics of Rambutan
To select a suitable Rambutan germplasm for release as a variety in respective to higher yield and good quality fruits.

Methodology:

Two rambutan germplasm NL Kha 001 and NL Kha 002 were collected from Thailand and planted at Hill Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Khagrachari in 2001 for study the feasibility of rambutan cultivation in the hilly areas of Bangladesh. The plants were grown well and produced fruits since 2009. During the year 2011-2012 both the germplasm were evaluated. The plant was fertilized with cow dung (15kg), urea (200g), TSP (200g) and MOP (100g) in two equal installments, one is before onset of rainy season and another is after rainy season. Intercultural operations like weeding, spading for loosing the soil, irrigation during drought season and insecticide (Dursban 2 g/l) was applied 2 times by spraying during fruit development to maturity stage to protect the red ant. Fully ripen fruits were harvested from the plant and 10 fruits were selected randomly and for collecting data of fruit qualitative and quantitative parameters. Data on plant height (m), base girth (cm), plant spreading on north-south and east-west direction (m), number of primary branches, time of flowering, time of harvesting, number of fruits/plant, single fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), seed weight (g), edible portion (%), TSS (%), yield/plant (kg), shape of fruit, fruit color at ripen, organoleptic taste and insect-diseases reaction were recorded and the mean data were calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering bearing habit, fruit characteristics i.e. taste, juiciness, sweetness, colour of pulp and yield, the germplasm NL Kha 001 performed better and might be released as an exotic fruit variety in Bangladesh. The germplasm produced fruits at September, which is far late than normal harvesting season. Hence the germplasm help to minimized the fruit deficiency during the lean period of the country.
