Citrus Fruit Shows in Khagrachari Hill Districts of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A citrus fruit shows were organized at the Khagrachari on 12 November 2012 for explore new citrus variety. A total of 332 different citrus fruit samples were presented. Among the germplasm the overall external appearance, sweetness, juiciness, taste and pulp texture ranged from very good to moderate, sweet to less sweet, very juicy to juicy, very good to moderate and very soft to moderate soft, respectively. Skin colour ranged from greenish yellow to yellow, yellow to bright orange, green to light yellow and greenish to shiny green for pummel, mandarin, sweet pulp citrus and sour pulp citrus, respectively. Pulp colour ranged from pink to whitish cream, straw to orange, straw to light straw and greenish white to whitish for pummel, mandarin, sweet pulp citrus and sour pulp citrus, respectively. Fruit weight of pummel, mandarin, sweet pulp citrus and sour pulp citrus varied from 450 to 1700 g, 125 to 409 g, 80 to 360 g and 80 to 200 g, respectively. TSS from 6.00 to 9.00%, 8.5 to 13%, 5.00 to 7.00% and 5.00 to 6.50%, respectively. Number of fruits/plant ranged from 60 to 1200, 20 to 250, 15 to 1225 and 7 to 1500, respectively.

Objectives:

A lot of diversity of citrus germplasm; pummelo, mandarin, malta, lemon, satkara etc. exists in the hill districts of Bangladesh and have been growing well for long time. The existing citrus germplasm could be identified through the citrus fruit show. After preliminary evaluation, the selected superior germplasm was collected and then evaluated in the research stations of BARI. This is an appropriate method for finding the best germplasm of citrus fruits growing in the hilly areas. Keeping this view in mind, the Citrus Fruit Show 2012 was organized in order to find out, collect, evaluate and conserve (in-situ) the superior citrus (pummelo, mandarin, malta and other sweet pulp and sour pulp citrus) germplasm at the research station and finally to release the superior ones as variety.

Methodology:

The citrus fruit shows were held at the Khagrachari on 12 November 2012. Citrus germplasm under four category viz. pummelo, mandarin, malta and other sweet pulp citrus and sour pulp citrus were collected from farmers field and presented in the show. A total of 332 different citrus fruit under this four samples were submitted in this show. Before placing the fruit samples in the fruit show, all the samples were preliminarily evaluated and among them 186were presented in the fruit shows. Out of these 332 germplasm, 16 pummelo, 22 mandarin, 3 malta and other sweet pulp citrus and 20 sour pulp citrus were selected through primary evaluation. Data on external appearance, fruit skin (epicarp) colour, fruit weight, pulp colour, TSS, sweetness, bitterness, juiciness, pulp texture, taste, plant age and number of fruits per plant were collected during evaluation. The data were statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

From Khagrachari hill district a total of 332 different citrus fruit samples viz. pummelo, mandarin, malta and other sweet pulp citrus and sour pulp citrus were collected Out of these 332 germplasm, 16 pummelo, 22 mandarin, 3 malta and other sweet pulp citrus and 20 sour pulp citrus were selected through primary evaluation. The selected superior germplasm will be collected, evaluated and conserved in the research station. After complete evaluation new varieties is expected to be developed.
