The experiment on interaction effect of grafting (veneer and cleft) at twelve times of grafting (November to October) in carambola was conducted at HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2010 to 2012. Among different methods and time of grafting, minimum days to bud break from grafting was taken by veneer in August (8.00 das) while cleft in January took maximum (34.66 days). The highest success (97.77%) was obtained from October in both the grafting and the lowest (35.55%) in February with cleft grafting. Maximum survivability (91.10%) at 60 and 90 DAG was observed in October with cleft and minimum in December with veneer (24.33% and 6.66%, respectively). Regarding growth parameters, after 360 DAG; maximum number of shoots/graft (3.00) was recorded in January and minimum (1.11) in November at same (veneer) grafting. Number of leaves/graft was noticed maximum (68.44) in June with veneer and minimum (18.72) in February with veneer. Shoot length ranged from 55.22 cm (cleft grafting in July) to 77.83 cm (veneer grafting in March). Shoot diameter varied from 0.46 cm to 0.67 cm, where veneer in April exhibited the lowest and cleft grafting done in January had the highest shoot diameter.

  1. To determine the suitable method and time of grafting for vegetative propagation of carambola.
  2. To study the interaction effect of methods and time of grafting  for vegetative propagation of carambola
  3. To standardized the effective time and method of propagation in carambola.

The experiment on method and time of grafting was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during November 2010 to October 2012. Carambola scions was grafted onto one year old carambola rootstocks. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) (Factorial) with three replications. Factor A: two methods of grafting  namely- M1- veneer grafting and M2- cleft grafting. Factor B: twelve months November to October. The graftings were done in first week of each month. Scions were collected from BARI Carambola 1 and grafed on to one old rootstocks of carambola. The rootstock seedlings were raised in (8//x6//) polybags. The polybags were filled with soil and cow dung in equal ratio. Proper care and management of the seedlings were taken on order to maintain their good health. Non flowering shoots of fresh growth having dark green in colour leaves and scions, about 15 to 20 cm long, straight, healthy, pest and disease free with swollen terminal bud were selected and grafted onto around one year old rootstock. Thirty grafts in each method constituted a unit of replication. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. The grafting operation was done in the first week of each month. The grafts were watered regularly. Intercultural operations like weeding, pest and disease control etc. were done as and when necessary. Days to bud break were considered when 50% new leaf emergence was occurred. Data on days to bud break, success at 30, 60 and 90 days after grafting; length and diameter of shoot, number of shoot and leaves per sapling at 90, 180, 270 and 360 days after grafting from each experimental unit were recorded and analyzed statistically using MSTAT-C soft ware.

From the result of this experiment, it was revealed that veneer grafting in October showed better performance in respect of success but cleft grafting showed better percent success and higher survivability compared to veneer grafting. So, propagation by veneer or cleft grafting method in the month of October September, August, July, and November is suggested for higher success and survivability of carambola.
