Effect of Time and Method of Grafting on Success and Growth of Carambola Graft

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The veneer and cleft gratings of carambola were done at first week of every month from November 2010 to October 2011 at HRC, BARI, Gazipur for study the effect of grafting method and time of grafting. Among different methods of grafting, minimum days to bud break from grafting was taken by cleft grafting (15.96 das) while veneer grafting took maximum (16.73 days). Higher grafting success (66.41%) was obtained from veneer and insignificantly lower (65.53%) in cleft. Maximum survivability at 60 and 90 DAG (52.59 and 42.68%, respectively) was observed in veneer grafting and minimum (55.94 and 48.19%, respectively) in cleft. Irrespective of growth parameters cleft grafting performed better than veneer grafting from 90 DAG to 360 DAG. Regarding time of grafting, minimum days to bud break (8.33 days) was required for August, while maximum (33.00 days) for January. The highest success at 30 DAG (94.99%) was recorded in October grafting and the lowest (45.66%) in December. The maximum survivability at 60 DAG and 90 DAG (88.33 and 84.99%, respectively) were observed in September, while minimum (26.72 and 8.82%, respectively) in December grafting. Different growth parameters of grafts at 360 DAG were found better in grafts of January than other months

Objectives:

To determine the suitable method and time of grafting for vegetative propagation of carambola.
To study the effect of methods and grafting time in vegetative propagation of carambola.
To standardized the effective time as well as method for vegetative propagation in carambola.

Methodology:

The experiment on method and time of grafting was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during November 2010 to October 2012. Carambola scions was grafted onto one year old carambola rootstocks. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) (Factorial) with three replications. Factor A: two methods of grafting namely- M₁- veneer grafting and M₂- cleft grafting. Factor B: twelve months from November to October. The graftings were done in first week of each month. Scions were collected from BARI Carambola 1 and grafed on to one old rootstocks of carambola. The rootstock seedlings were raised in (8^//x6^//) polybags. The polybags were filled with soil and cow dung in equal ratio. Proper care and management of the seedlings were taken on order to maintain their good health. Non flowering shoots of fresh growth having dark green in colour leaves and scions, about 15 to 20 cm long, straight, healthy, pest and disease free with swollen terminal bud were selected and grafted onto around one year old rootstock. Thirty grafts in each method constituted a unit of replication. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. The grafting operation was done in the first week of each month. The grafts were watered regularly. Intercultural operations like weeding, pest and disease control etc. were done as and when necessary. Days to bud break were considered when 50% new leaf emergence was occurred. Data on days to bud break, success at 30, 60 and 90 days after grafting; length and diameter of shoot, number of shoot and leaves per sapling at 90, 180, 270 and 360 days after grafting from each experimental unit were recorded and analyzed statistically using MSTAT-C soft ware.

Achievement/Findings:

From the result of this experiment, it was revealed that veneer grafting in showed better performance in respect of success and survivalists of grafting but cleft grafting showed better growth performance compared to veneer grafting. Considering time of grafting October grafting performed better for grafting success, but survivability at 60 DAG and 90 DAG were superior in grafts of September. Different growth parameters of grafts at 360 DAG were found better in the grafts produced at January.
