Potentials Use Rainfed Low Land Rice Fields for Chickpea Cultivation in the Drought Prone Areas: a New Dimension for Improving Farmers' Income

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Economics of chickpea cultivation as sequential cropping with T.Aman and direct seeded Aman under drought-prone low land conditions of Rajshahi district was assessed empirically. Farm level data. generated through sample survey were used. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed. I; in analyzing the data. The analysis revealed that, farms which followed direct seeded rice (DSR)- chickpea cropping obtained better yield because of timely establishment of chickpea and receiving adequate rainfall. Economic benefit from DSR followed by chickpea cropping was much higher (8.5%) compared to that from transplanted rice (TPR)- chickpea pattern. Increase in farm income from' DSR-chickpea pattern varied from 7 to 10 percent over the TPR-chickpea pattern for different farm size groups. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that, out of different socioeconomic and biophysical factors, farm size, proportion of cropped area under irrigation, land type, selection of rice genotype etc. were the important determinants for the adoption of the rice-chickpea cropping pattern. About 75% farmers agreed to the proposition that rice-chickpea cropping is an emerging technology for increasing the household income of the resource poor farms.

Objectives:

(i) To compare economic potentials of Direct Seeded Rice (DSR)-Chickpea and Transplanted rice (TPR)-Chickpea pattern in the study areas.

(ii) To evaluate the impact of the Rice- Chickpea cropping patterns on income generation of the farm households.

(iii) To identify the socio-economic and biophysical factors and their relative contribution to the adoption of Rice- Chickpea cropping practice in the study areas.

Methodology:

This study used mainly primary data generated through sample survey. Data were collected from Rainfed Lowland Rice Research Consortium (RLRRC) site in Rajshahi district. Two villages under Nachole Upazila were selected purposively under the RLRRC area. A total of 60 farmers taking 30 from each village were selected as the sample farms for collecting information on cultivation practice (i.e. DSR and TPR as well as Chickpea). In selecting the sample farms random sampling technique was followed and special emphasis was given so that the sample captures the farmers from all farm size groups. Data were collected through direct interview method using pre-designed questionnaire. All data were based on farmers' memory recall.

It is evident from the evaluation of pertinent issues relating to the adoption of rice-chickpea cropping practice under drought-prone low land ecology of Rajshahi district that direct seeded rice followed by chickpea cropping pattern proved to be an economically viable cropping practice. Farmers' gross margin from DSR- Chickpea was about Tk.66127/ha which was much higher compared to that of TPR-chickpea pattern. However, it was almost 10 % higher for the small farmers and about 8% higher for the medium farmers. Among different factors of adoption of the rice-chickpea cropping, higher proportion of area under irrigation, land type and selection of T. Aman rice genotypes were the important determinants. Majority of the sample farmers opined very firmly that adoption of DSR-Chickpea cropping practice would be helpful for increasing household income. Regarding further acceleration of the farm level adoption, about 70% farmers opined in favour of conducting more field demonstrations on the aforesaid cropping pattern.
