Interactive Effect of Time and Method of Grafting on Success and Growth of Jamun Graft

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during December 2010 to October 2012 using three methods (veneer, cleft and splice) and six times (December, February, April, June, August and October) of grafting to standardize propagation technique of jamun. Earliest bud break (19.50 day) was observed in cleft grafting and the longest time to bud break (23.28 day) was observed at veneer grafting. The highest success (49.92%) was recorded in cleft and the lowest (42.83%) in splice. Survival percentage at 60 DAG and 90 DAG were noted maximum (41.48 and30.00%, respectively) in cleft grafting and minimum (33.85 and 26.84%, respectively) in veneer grafting. All the growth parameters following same trend, and found maximum in cleft grafting. Earlier bud break (13.77 days) was observed in August, while longer (29.11 days) in December. Grafting in October showed maximum success (90.73%), while minimum (18.44%) in April. Survivability at 60 DAG and 90 DAG were attained the highest (81.55 and 69.36%, respectively) in October grafting and the lowest (13.74%) at 60 DAG in April and (7.66%) at 90 DAG in February. All the growth parameters under studied performed better at October grafting.

Objectives:

To determine the suitable method and time of grafting for vegetative propagation of jamun.
To study the effect of methods and grafting time in vegetative propagation of jamun.
To standardized the effective time as well as method for jamun propagation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during December 2010 to October 2012. Jamun scion was grafted onto one year old healthy and uniform jamun rootstocks using three methods namely (i) veneer, (ii) cleft and (iii) splice at six times viz. first week of (1). December, (2). February, (3). April, (4). June,(5). August and (6). October. The rootstock seedlings were raised in (8 x 6 inch) poly bags. The poly bags were filled with soil and cow dung in equal ratio. Proper care and management of the seedlings were taken to maintain their good health. Scions about 15 to 20 cm long, straight, healthy, pest and disease free with swollen terminal bud in bulging condition from non flowering shoots of fresh growth having leaves with dark green in colour were selected. Leaves on the scion sticks were removed without damaging the buds and then grafted onto rootstocks. Thirty grafts in each method constituted a unit of replication. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The grafting operation was done in the first week of every alternate month. The grafts were watered regularly. Intercultural operations like weeding, pest and disease control etc. were done as and when necessary. Days to bud break were considered when 50% new leaf emergence was occurred. Data on days to bud break, success and survivability after 30, 60 and 90 days of grafting; , number of shoot and leaves; length and diameter of shoot per sapling after 90, 180, 270 and 360 days of grafting from each experimental unit were recorded and analyzed statistically using MSTATC soft ware.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results of the experiment, it may be concluded that among the grafting methods cleft grafting showed better performance in respect of percent success, survivability and vegetative growths. On the other hand, grafting in October performed better over other months of grafting. So, vegetative propagation of jamun is suggested by cleft grafting in the month of October for better success and survivability.
