Effect of Rootstocks on the Growth, Yield and Quality of Mandarin at Jaintapur, Sylhet

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of BARI Kamala-1 was studied using different rootstocks namely Rangpur lime, Rough lemon, Kata jamir, Askar jamir, Pummelo and Cleopatra mandarin at the Citrus Research Station (CRS), Jaintapur, Sylhet from June 2012 to July 2013. The plants were planted in July’2012. A wide variation was observed among the mandarin plants grafted on different root stock and in case of plant height the tallest plant (130.0 cm) was found from the plant grafted on the rough lemon rootstock, while the shortest from Kata jamir (101.7 cm). Maximum base girth (9.7 cm) was also recorded from rough lemon rootstock which was at par with Rongpur lime (9.2 cm) while the lowest from Cleopetra mandarin (6.3 cm). Plants grafted over Rongpur lime root stock exhibited maximum E-W spreading (95.0 cm) and grafted on rough lemon rootstock exhibited the highest N-S spreading (113.0 cm). Mandarin plant grafted on rough lemon and pummelo rootstock performed the excellent and the worst growth condition, respectively. When mandarin plants grafted on askor jamir root stock the branching density was sparse, on the other hand plants on rest of the root stock produced medium dense branching.

Objectives:

To determine the suitable rootstock for vegetative propagation of mandarin.
To study the effect of rootstock in success, survivalist and growth of mandarin.
To standardized the effective rootstock for mandarin cultivation in Jaintapur, Sylhet .

Methodology:

Six different types of rootstocks such as Rangpur lime, Rough lemon, Kata jamir, Askar jamir, Pummelo and Cleopatra mandarin were collected as seeds and directly sown in nursery beds for raising seedlings. The scion of BARI kamala-1 grafted onto one year old seedlings of rootstock following cleft grafting method at 2010. During July 2012 two years old grafts of BARI kamala-1 were planted at experimental field. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The saplings distance was 3 ×3 m. Each of the plants was fertilized with cow dung 10 kg, Urea 200 g, TSP 150 g and MoP 150 g in two installments at the beginning and the end of the rainy season. The saplings were irrigated at an interval of 15 days from January to March. Imidachloprid (Imitaf 0.25ml/L of water) was applied to reduce leaf miner infestation when new leaf emerged. Weeding was done regularly so that weeds cannot retard the growth of the sapling. Mulching was done in the winter. Data were recorded on plant height, base girth canopy spreading, number of branches/plant, leaf size and growth condition and analyzed by MSTST-C programme. DMRT was performed for interpretation of results.

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded that among the rootstock Rough lemon showed better performance in respect of plant height, base girth, plant spreading, growth condition and bunch density and might be recommended for vegetative propagation in mandarin for Jaintapur, Sylhet .
