Effect of Rootstock and Time of Grafting on the Success and Growth of Sweet Orange Graft

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out to find out the suitable rootstock and time of grafting for maximizing the success of grafting in sweet orange at Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during March 2012 to September 2012. Five rootstocks viz. Rangpur lime, Rough lemon, Kalamunchi, Pummelo and Sweet orange were used in the study. The interaction of rootstocks and time of grafting had significant influence on the success of sweet orange grafts except shoot diameter. Among the treatment combinations at 90 DAG Rangpur lime in the month of June gave the highest success (84.67%) and Kalamunchi in the month of September showed the lowest (52.00%). At 90DAG the highest number of shoots (4.19) was recorded Rangpur during July. The highest shoot length (14.02 cm) was recorded from Rangpur lime at July, while the lowest (2.14) was recorded from in Kalamunchi at April. In case of number of leaves/graft after 90 DAG was maximum (15.93) in Rangpur lime during July. The lowest leaves/graft (6.86) was noticed from the grafts on Kalamunchi during the month of March. In Bangladesh temperature, humidity and rainfall are higher in June- July which are favorable for grafting operations.

Objectives:

To determine the suitable rootstock for vegetative propagation of sweet orange
To study the effect of rootstock in success, survivalist and growth of sweet orange
To standardized the effective rootstock for sweet orange cultivation in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during March 2012 to September 2012. BARI Malta-1 was included as scion and cleft grafting was followed in the study. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments consist of five rootstocks viz. Rangpur lime, Rough lemon, Kalamunchi, Pummelo and Sweet orange and seven different time of grafting at an interval of one month (March/ 2012 to September/2012. There were altogether 35 treatment combinations. Nine months to fifteen months old rootstocks were used. Rootstocks were raised in 8"x 7" polybags filled with a mixture of sandy loam soil and cowdung (1:1) and scions were collected from BARI Malta 1. Cleft grafting method was used in the study. Ten grafts were made for each rootstock in each replication every month. The grafting operation was done on the same day of scion collection by sharp grafting knife and the area of rootstock- scion union was tied with grafting tape. The grafts were covered with polythene bag for the retention of high humidity in the bag till union of grafts and new shoot appearance. After grafting operation, the grafts were kept under partial shade in the nursery. Keen observations were made up to bud break and polythene cover was removed after bud break. The grafting tape was removed after 90 days of grafting. Data on days to bud break, percent success after 30, 60 and 90 days of grafting, number of shoots, shoot length and diameter; number of leaves per graft after 90 days of grafting were recorded and statistically analyzed following MSTATC program.

Achievement/Findings:

These results revealed that, grafting on Rangpur lime rootstock in the month of June - July gave the best results. However, regardless of grafting time of the year Rangpur lime performed as the best rootstock for grafting in sweet orange.
