Effect of Method and Time of Grafting on the Success and Growth of Bael Graft

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study to determine the suitable method and time for the propagation of bael was carried out at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the period from March 2012 to September 2012. Three vegetative methods viz. cleft, veneer and splice grafting were used in the study in 7 months within March to September 2012. All the attributes except shoot diameter at 90 days of grafting were significantly influenced by the interaction effect of grafting methods and time of grafting. After grafting operation, maximum time to bud break (28.33 days) was recorded in veneer grafting at March, and minimum (22.00 days) in splice grafting July. Percent success of grafts at 30 DAG was the highest (90.33%) in cleft during June, which was statistically similar with the result of veneer and splice grafting in the same month and in all methods of July grafting also exhibited the same results. The success percentage of grafts after 60 and 90 days of grafting showed the same trend of results. After success interms of other growth like number of shoot, shoot length and leaf number at 90 days of grafting cleft grafting under July showed superiority over other treatment combination.

Objectives:

To determine the suitable rootstock for vegetative propagation of bale.
To study the effect of rootstock in success, survivalist and growth of bale
To standardized the effective rootstock for bale cultivation in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during March 2012 to September 2012. Scions of bael were grafted onto 9 to 15 months old healthy and uniform local bael seedlings using three methods namely (i). veneer, (ii) cleft and (iii). splice at seven months viz. first week of (1). March, (2). April, (3). May, (4). June,(5). July, (6). August and (7). September. The rootstock seedlings were raised in (8x6 inch) poly bags. The poly bags were filled with soil and cow dung in equal ratio. Proper care and management of the seedlings were taken to maintain their good health. Scions about 15 to 20 cm long, straight, healthy, pest and disease free with swollen terminal bud in bulging condition from non flowering shoots of fresh growth having leaves with dark green in colour were selected. Leaves on the scion sticks were removed without damaging the buds and then grafted onto rootstocks. Thirty grafts in each method constituted a unit of replication. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The grafting operation was done in the first week of every alternate month. The grafts were watered regularly. Intercultural operations like weeding, pest and disease control etc. were done as and when necessary. Days to bud break were considered when 50% new leaf emergence was occurred. Data on days to bud break, success and survivability after 30, 60 and 90 days of grafting; , number of shoot and leaves; length and diameter of shoot per sapling after 90, 180, 270 and 360 days of grafting from each experimental unit were recorded and analyzed statistically using MSTATC soft ware.

Achievement/Findings:

Percent success of grafts at 30, 60 and 90 DAG was the highest in cleft during June, which was statistically similar with the result of veneer and splice grafting in the same month. The results revealed that irrespective of methods, grafting in the month of June or July was found the most suitable time for successful vegetative propagation of bael.
